Authenticity Perspectives from a Chocolate Fan's View

My husband and I recently celebrated a big milestone anniversary by taking a trip to St. Lucia where we did a lot of chilling out but also a bit of exploring on the island. We are people who enjoy and appreciate the culture wherever we are visiting, and we like to get out and see things we just can't see in North Carolina (which has plenty of beautiful sites to see as well - completely different article sometime ??). We set St. Lucia as a goal many years ago when we were young, broke, and had never been further away than Myrtle Beach, SC. So getting there was a pretty cool milestone for us.
St. Lucia was just beautiful - and included a port that fascinated the supply chain nerd in me. The logistics of supporting an island with 180,000 residents but up to 3 million annual visitors was something that takes some serious coordination!
We had a full day of exploration later in our vacation that included activities I had booked months ago which I was very excited about - a day that would include making our own chocolate at Project Chocolat. I'm a chocolate NUT and enjoy really good and high quality chocolates. So the fact that we were going to be making our own chocolate (by hand) on World Chocolate Day had me excited like a child on a school field trip - for real.
As we drove up the driveway to our stop at Project Chocolat, the art caught my eye, but the word "Authenticity" on the wall really stood out to me as well. Of course it represented the importance of an authentic process from ingredients through their production process, but that word really resonates with me for so many reasons.
For their chocolate-making business and for their overall reputation, authenticity in sourcing their ingredients from local and reputable farmers and having complete control of the cocoa bean harvest-to-production process ensures the high quality they expect for their brand.
For us - as individuals - authenticity is also very important in our work & personal lives. Being authentic and encouraging authenticity builds stronger teams. I have worked in environments where it was challenging to know if someone was being real or not, and those types of questions about people typically don't lead to an effective team; so the "harvest" of the leaders isn't always great.
Here are a few thoughts - from a big-time chocolate fan's perspective - of why authenticity is something you should always consider.
