From Skepticism to Loyalty: How Business Leaders Build Unshakable Trust with Their Team and Customers???

During a recent live learning event moderated by Mickey Fitch-Collins, PhD, leadership experts Larry Levine, Meredith Bell, and Damon Lembi shared strategies for building trust in a climate of rising skepticism. The panel acknowledged that remote work and less face-to-face interaction have increased doubt among employees and customers. However, they? agreed that trust can still be nurtured with the right approach.???

Levine, Co-CEO of Selling From the Heart, host of the Selling From the Heart Podcast, and the two-time bestselling author of Selling in a Post-Trust World and Selling from the Heart, along with Bell, CEO of Grow Strong Leaders, co-author of Connect with Your Team,? and host of the Grow Strong Leaders Podcast, and Lembi, CEO of Learnit, host of The Learn-It-All Podcast, and the bestselling author of The Learn-It-All Leader, spoke candidly about the evolving challenges of leading in a post-trust world with their host, Mickey Fitch-Collins, PhD, a leadership and professional development expert and top-ranked Learnit facilitator.??

The Decline of Trust?

Trust is the cornerstone of successful business relationships. Levine noted that skepticism has increased with remote work, as people’s “BS meters” are more finely tuned. “It’s how you show up, listen, and make others feel,” he explained. Bell emphasized that trust is built when leaders prioritize long-term relationships over short-term gains and show genuine interest in their teams.?

Four Strategies for Building Trust in Teams and Customers?

  • Be Transparent and Authentic. Levine advocated for leading “from the heart,” and warned that without trust, relationships crumble. Sales teams, he said, should focus on serving clients by anticipating their needs.?

  • Communicate Clearly and Consistently. Bell stressed the importance of clear communication, especially in remote work settings. Lembi added that clear expectations and consistency are key to preventing confusion and maintaining trust.?

  • Seize the First Three Minutes. Levine shared that leaders have only three minutes to make a lasting impression. Every conversation is an opportunity to build or erode trust.?

  • Embrace Vulnerability. Bell pointed out that admitting mistakes and showing vulnerability accelerates trust-building. Authentic leaders form deeper connections by being open and transparent.?

Building a Trust-First Culture?

The panel agreed that trust must start at the top and be cultivated throughout the organization. Leaders need to continuously nurture trust through consistent follow-through and a genuine commitment to serving others. Lembi emphasized the importance of in-person gatherings for strengthening relationships, especially in today’s hybrid work environment.?

Conclusion?

In today’s skeptical business climate, trust must be earned. Leaders who prioritize transparency, authenticity, and consistency will build loyalty with both teams and customers. By embracing vulnerability and maintaining clear communication, they can transform skepticism into unwavering loyalty, ultimately fostering a culture of trust that drives business growth.?

Vulnerable Leaders Are Powerful?

Because no one is perfect, everyone is vulnerable, but many leaders fall into the trap of wanting to be (or at least appear to be) superhuman. They worry that owning their mistakes and showing vulnerability will make them look weak, preventing them from fostering a culture of trust and openness. This internal conflict between looking good and doing good often results in a lack of genuine connections within the team, ultimately undermining effective leadership and collaboration.??

If leaders consistently avoid vulnerability, it can severely hamper innovation and trust within the organization. Such secretive cultures struggle to adapt to changing market demands, potentially leading to decreased employee loyalty and engagement. Over time, this resistance to openness diminishes organizational resilience and overall performance.??

Embrace Vulnerability to Foster Authentic Leadership and Team Connection??

Leaders who embrace vulnerability not only demonstrate self-awareness but also create a more inclusive atmosphere where employees feel valued and understood. This openness encourages team members to be their true selves, share ideas more freely, and collaborate without fear of judgment. Here are some ways you can help normalize vulnerability and enable stronger connections, which are the foundation for high-performing teams and successful leadership.?

  • Educate Leaders on the Benefits of Vulnerability.? Provide skill-building and resources to help leaders understand how vulnerability can enhance their effectiveness. Recommend authors like Brené Brown, Simon Sinek, Patrick Lencioni, and Daniel Goleman who advocate for vulnerability as a skill that leads to stronger team cohesion.??

  • Lead with Empathy.? Develop empathy as a fundamental leadership skill. Leaders who show genuine care and understanding toward their team members' situations foster a supportive environment that encourages openness.??

  • Normalize the Discussion of Failures and Mistakes.? Make it standard practice to discuss setbacks and learning experiences during meetings. This approach helps diminish the stigma associated with failure and encourages a culture focused on growth and learning.??

  • Create Safe Spaces for Sharing.? Establish regular sessions where team members can openly share personal insights and concerns in a supportive setting, ensuring that these forums are seen as opportunities for strengthening team bonds.??

  • Practice Active Listening.? Encourage leaders to learn and engage in active listening when team members express vulnerabilities. This involves full attention, acknowledging feelings, and thoughtful responses, reinforcing the importance and value of open communication.??

  • Develop Emotional Intelligence.? Invest in emotional intelligence skill-building for leaders. Higher emotional intelligence enables leaders to better manage their own emotions and understand those of others, which is crucial for fostering an open and vulnerable leadership style.??

Embracing vulnerability isn’t about showing weakness; it's a profound strength that can transform leadership and team dynamics. Vulnerable leaders build a more connected, communicative, and resilient organization. This shift not only enhances internal relationships but also positions the company to thrive in a competitive environment by being more adaptive, innovative, and genuinely engaging for all employees.??
