Authenticity - Can you really be yourself at work?
It comes with prerequisites
In the bustling world of corporate culture, the pursuit of authenticity can sometimes feel like navigating a labyrinth of expectations and conformity that comes with a few prerequisites.
Taking risks and being authentic is a privilege that many are not afforded,?
Hence, we should not expect everyone to take the same approach to this, especially when there are prerequisites.
So, next time you utter the words "be your authentic self," we open up the potential to cause harm to some groups.
Especially, in organisations where they have not taken the time to create or do not have an infrastructure in place to support risk-taking, without consequences or retaliation.
We are all human, and all these evaluations happen in real-time and how we choose to be authentic is heavily influenced by our perception of psychological safety.
For example, I've seen time and again that my authenticity as a Black woman is what gets me into trouble, whereas someone else's authenticity gets them promoted and celebrated.
But, I still advocate being authentic anyway, because assimilation or pretending to be someone else all day or suppressing your identity eats away at your self-worth and that in itself is a form of aggression against your own psyche.
I have often wrestled if it is ever worth negotiating my mental health as a sacrifice for a salary.?
However, authenticity isn't just a buzzword; it's a catalyst for empowerment and growth.
And, the journey towards being our authentic selves in the workplace can come with prerequisites for some more than others which makes authenticity particularly daunting.
7 Ways To Navigate Authenticity With Confidence
1: Know Thyself, Embrace Thyself
The first step to authenticity is knowing and embracing who you are. Explore your values, passions, and quirks. Own it! Remember, your authenticity is your superpower. Self-reflection and introspection are essential tools in this journey towards self-discovery.
2: Find Your Tribe
In the forest of corporate culture, finding your tribe is crucial. Seek out allies who celebrate your uniqueness and lift you up. They will sprinkle confidence dust on your wings. Together, you'll create a sanctuary of support where authenticity flourishes like wildflowers.
3: Speak your truth
Let your voice soar like a phoenix in flight. Speak your truth with confidence, knowing that your perspective is valuable. And don't forget the glitter—metaphorical or literal. It adds sparkle to your ideas and makes them shine brighter.
4: Create a Supportive Network
Surrounding oneself with a supportive network of peers, mentors, and allies is crucial. These connections serve as anchors in times of uncertainty and provide validation for their authentic selves. Seeking out affinity groups, diversity networks, or professional organisations can offer a sense of belonging and solidarity. In these spaces, marginalised professionals can share experiences, exchange advice, and find strength in community.
5: Challenge the Status Quo:?
Authenticity often requires challenging the status quo and advocating for change. Marginalised professionals can be powerful agents of transformation by speaking out against discrimination, advocating for inclusive policies, and amplifying underrepresented voices. By challenging entrenched norms and biases, you pave the way for a more equitable and diverse workplace where authenticity is celebrated and not suppressed.
6: Embrace Vulnerability?
Vulnerability is not a sign of weakness but rather a testament to courage and strength. Share your struggles and triumphs with authenticity. Vulnerability builds bridges of empathy and fosters genuine connections- it's what makes us human. Don’t let judgment or backlash make you afraid. Instead focus on fostering deeper connections with colleagues to humanise their experiences, and spark meaningful conversations about inclusion and empathy.?
7: Lead by Example
Marginalised professionals have the power to inspire others by leading authentically. Whether it's through mentorship, advocacy, or simply by being true to themselves, they can pave the way for future generations of professionals to embrace their authenticity unapologetically. By modeling authenticity in leadership positions, they demonstrate that diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords but integral components of a thriving workplace culture.
Authenticity belongs to all
Authenticity should not be a privilege reserved for a few, but something that belongs to all, without prerequisites.
For some professionals, embracing authenticity in the workplace still requires courage, resilience, and a commitment to self-discovery.?
Remember this: authenticity isn't a destination; it's a way of being.?
By knowing yourself, cultivating your confidence and building supportive networks, we pave the way for a more inclusive and authentic workplace where everyone can thrive.
So, keep shining bright like the star you are, you are illuminating the world with your unique brilliance ??

7 个月Being the only black woman in a C-Suite role in a predominately white male industry, I am consistently following a few of your guidelines. Lead by example and speak your truth are essential in my role. I share this with those that I mentor. Thank you for reminding us not to conform to the status quo.
That's extremely helpful Marteka authenticity definitely depends on the style of leadership.
