Authenticity & Artificiality in AI

AI is everywhere. There is no denying the fact that the AI / ML will advance in coming years and permeate in every sphere of our lives. Machines will assist , augment and possibly replace humans.

Looking back , humans evolved from animal kingdom and differentiate themselves on basis of ability to think , reason and logic. So far the world was made up two species Animals and humans. As AI advances leap and bounds will AI be the new form of life ?

We have got accustomed to using technology to assist us in various daily activities . Take word processor and assistive spelling or grammar checking to help comply with laid down grammar rules of the language. In this activity human is the author and technology is the editor.

With Gen AI the role is reversed ! Human prompts the system to generate the content and then edits to fit the purpose. AI has become the author and human is relegated the role of editor !

The exchange of role leads to all sorts of ethical issues around authenticity .

Story Published in 1843 ( The Nightingale by Hans Christian)

In the age of algorithms and simulation , a story written in 1843 provides a valuable insight . It is about a Chinese emperor who is captivated by the melodious voice of a real Nightingale. Enchanting songs and voice from the bird brings solace and peace to the emperor and all his subjects. However, due to various reasons emperor is presented a mechanical nightingale who is more beautiful and adorned. Emperor gets swayed by the ornate appearance decides to replace the real nightingale.

Slowly artificial nightingale gains popularity due to its superficial abilities and appeal. One day emperor falls ill and despite multiple attempts he is unable to get the genuine solace from her signing. Unable to provide the emotional depth of the real nightingale song, artificial bird breaks down under the strain of constant use. In face of Emperor Dire condition, authentic Nightingale reappears and revives him with its heartfelt melody .

The Boundaries of Artificial Intelligence

Above 19th Century story tells a compelling limitation of Artificiality. While it is 175 year old story it can be extended to current age . Technology may excel imitating the nature it cannot fully capture the essence of authenticity, genuiness and emotions .

AI can analyse wide set of data , recognise intricate patterns , make predication, perform complex tasks. However , there are inherent limitations that prevent AI coming near the human authenticity. Algorithms can understand patters possibly human moods as well but still not able to decipher the true meaning of Joy, sorrow or empathy .

Raw , unfiltered emotions, Vulnerabilities , values, culture , historical perspective , to be good , helpful , thankful, grateful compassion , tears of joy and sorrow are ?somehow ingrained in human DNA’s which define us and make us on the most involved form of homo sapiens

While AI can facilitate communications it cannot form authentic personal connections and lacks genuine emotions. AI operates on programmed algorithms and lacks genuine consciousness and intent . It can not take moral or ethical decisions based on human values.

Value of Human Authenticity

As tech automate and make live more easy and productive, the value of Human authenticity becomes more important . Authencity matters as it a social glue for trust

Our uniqueness as individuals is our ability to form authentic bonds which transcends boundaries , race, religion or even life forms. It is irreplaceable gift that only makes us who we are but define the humanity . ?

AI is changing the world . But there will NEVER be ‘ Artificial’ joy. No 'Artificial' compassion or empathy. No robot or bot can replace the laugher or innocence of a newly born. It is myth that human converse verbally , most of the human connections and conversations happen through eyes, expressions, touch and body language .

AI might be the new brain but Authentic Human Interaction will always be the Heart !

And there is never any 'Artificiality' in a new born Heart - it is always a bundle of joy - most purest form of life !
