Authenticity Amplified: Strategies for Creating a Safe and Emotionally Intelligent Workplace

Authenticity scares the mediocre. Don’t diminish your light to comfort the insecure. When you silence your voice to fit in, you betray your own potential. - Alicia Perkins

Alicia Perkins captures a profound truth about authenticity and self-expression. It's often the case that those who are not comfortable with themselves or lack confidence in their abilities feel threatened by authenticity. They may prefer conformity and seek to diminish the uniqueness and light of others to feel more secure. However, as Perkins suggests, it's crucial not to let the insecurities of others dictate how we express ourselves.

Diminishing our light or silencing our voice to fit in not only does a disservice to ourselves but also undermines our potential. Authenticity is not just about being true to oneself but also about embracing one's strengths, quirks, and individuality. It's through this authenticity that we can truly shine and reach our fullest potential.

Silencing oneself not only minimizes our own gifts but also deprives others of the valuable insights, experiences, and perspectives that we have to offer. We have learned from EVERY obstacle, challenge, and setback, which has given us unique gifts and talents that are meant to be shared with the world. Whether these gifts come from a higher power, personal experiences, or coaching, they hold immense value not just for ourselves but also for those around us.

When we silence our voices and dim our lights, we forget to HONOR OURSELVES for the grit and resilience we have used to PUSH. It's a disservice to both ourselves and the broader community, especially those watching us, emboldened by our bravery and ability to do it with grace. Now I also do it in style, come on, hair, nails, face, lol. Embracing authenticity means honoring the gifts we've been given and using them to uplift and empower others.

When a co-worker told me I was taking up too much space, I had to remind her how much she didn't know or see! She didn't know how many nights I cried, prayed, went to therapy, and got an executive coach, so I could fully show up how I do NOW. So, I will respectfully take up space, use my voice to speak for those not in the room, and bring others into these spaces. When we speak our truth and share our experiences openly, we create space for bravery, connection, empathy, and understanding. We become catalysts for positive change and transformation, not just in our own lives but in the lives of those who are touched by our authenticity.

"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:16 (NIV)

Here are some thoughts on how being authentic in the workplace is intertwined with creating a psychologically safe environment that emphasizes emotional intelligence:

  1. Psychologically Safe Environment: Authenticity thrives in an environment where individuals feel safe to express themselves without fear of judgment or reprisal. Leaders play a crucial role in creating such an environment by fostering open communication, encouraging diverse perspectives, and valuing each team member's contributions. When employees feel psychologically safe, they are more likely to share their ideas, voice concerns, and engage in meaningful dialogue. This leads to increased innovation, creativity, and collaboration within the team or organization. Leaders can promote psychological safety by actively listening to their team members, providing constructive feedback, acknowledging mistakes, and creating opportunities for growth and development without punitive measures.

"Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you." - Marianne Williamson

  1. Emotional Intelligence Training: Emphasizing Emotional Intelligence (EI) in the workplace is essential for fostering authentic communication and relationships. EI encompasses various skills, including self-awareness, self-reflection, self-management, and self-recognition, that contribute to effective interpersonal interactions. Self-Awareness allows individuals to understand their emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and values, enabling them to align their actions with their authentic selves. Leaders can encourage self-awareness through reflective practices, feedback mechanisms, and mindfulness techniques. Self-Reflection involves critically evaluating one's thoughts, behaviors, and impact on others. It helps individuals gain insights into their communication style, decision-making processes, and areas for improvement. Incorporating self-reflection exercises into regular practices promotes authenticity and personal growth. Self-Management entails regulating one's emotions, impulses, and reactions in challenging situations. It involves staying composed under pressure, adapting to change, and handling conflicts constructively. Leaders can support self-management by providing emotional support, teaching stress management techniques, and promoting work-life balance. Self-Recognition involves acknowledging and celebrating one's achievements, progress, and contributions. It boosts confidence, motivation, and overall well-being. Leaders can foster a culture of self-recognition by giving recognition and appreciation, encouraging self-care practices, and promoting a positive mindset.

By integrating psychological safety practices and emotional intelligence training into the workplace culture, leaders can create an environment where authenticity flourishes, leading to enhanced individual and team performance, satisfaction, and overall organizational success.
