Empowerment is not just a concept; it is a commitment to nurturing potential and fostering growth. My journey as President of the African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA) Forum has been an incredible testament to this philosophy. Leading this esteemed organisation has not only been a professional honour but a deeply personal mission to authentically empower the next generation of women in finance. Alongside my role as Head of Business Restructuring at BDO South Africa, I have seen firsthand how empowerment and authentic leadership can drive profound change.
The Mandate: Education and Empowerment
At the core of AWCA’s mission is the commitment to education and empowerment. We believe that by providing aspiring women accountants with the resources, support, and opportunities they need, we can cultivate a new generation of leaders who are equipped to make significant contributions to the industry and society.
Our programs are designed to bridge the gap between academic achievement and professional success. From mentorship initiatives to scholarships, we ensure that young women have the tools they need to excel. AWCA has always been more than an organisation; it is a community where knowledge is shared, support is given, and achievements are celebrated.
Fostering Authentic Leadership
One of the key tenets of my leadership style is authenticity. Authentic leadership is about being true to oneself while guiding others with integrity, empathy, and transparency. Throughout my tenure, I have strived to model these values, creating an environment where young women feel seen, heard, and valued.
In my role as Head of Business Restructuring at BDO South Africa, I apply these same principles. Authentic leadership involves recognising and nurturing the unique strengths of each individual. At AWCA and BDO, we celebrate diversity and encourage our members to bring their whole selves to the table. This inclusive approach not only enriches our organisations but also prepares our members and employees to lead with confidence and authenticity in their careers.
Mentorship: A Pillar of Empowerment
Mentorship has been a cornerstone of our efforts at AWCA. We understand that guidance from experienced professionals can be transformative. By connecting young women with seasoned mentors, we provide them with the insights, advice, and encouragement they need to navigate their career paths successfully.
Personally, I have witnessed the profound impact of mentorship. My mentors have played a crucial role in my journey, offering wisdom and support that have helped shape my career. It is immensely fulfilling to now pay it forward, helping to guide and inspire the next generation of women leaders, both at AWCA and within BDO’s restructuring services.

Creating Opportunities
Empowerment also means creating tangible opportunities for growth and advancement. Through partnerships with corporate sponsors and educational institutions, AWCA has been able to offer scholarships, internships, and job placements to our members. These opportunities are designed to not only build skills and experience but also to open doors that might otherwise remain closed.
At BDO, our business restructuring services aim to not only save businesses but also safeguard jobs and create new opportunities for growth. By applying innovative approaches and fostering a supportive environment, we help companies and their employees navigate challenging times, ultimately contributing to the broader economic development of our communities.
Aligning Strategies for Greater Impact
My dual roles at AWCA and BDO have allowed me to see the synergies between development finance and business restructuring. By integrating principles from both fields, we can unlock new opportunities for growth and advancement. Aligning our strategies ensures that we are not only addressing immediate financial challenges but also laying the groundwork for long-term sustainability and success.
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on my journey as President of AWCA and Head of Business Restructuring at BDO South Africa, I am filled with optimism for the future. The challenges we face are significant, but so are the opportunities. By continuing to invest in the education and empowerment of young women, we can build a more inclusive, innovative, and resilient industry.
Empowering the next generation is not just a professional responsibility; it is a personal passion. I am committed to ensuring that AWCA remains a beacon of support and inspiration for women in finance. Together, we can create a legacy of authentic leadership and empowerment that will resonate for generations to come.
A Call to Action
To my peers in the industry, particularly in emerging countries like South Africa, the call to action is clear. Embrace innovation as a catalyst for change. Invest in agile restructuring, harness the power of digital transformation, and prioritise the human element in your organisational strategies. By doing so, we can collectively drive progress, foster resilience, and unlock the full potential of businesses in emerging economies. Let us seize this opportunity to lead the way toward a brighter, more sustainable future.
In conclusion, my journey with AWCA and BDO has been a testament to the power of authentic leadership and the profound impact of empowerment. As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of finance, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to nurturing and uplifting the next generation. By doing so, we not only honour the mission of AWCA but also pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future.
