This New York Times piece on "leadership" assumes that leadership is one of these two styles. While the baby boomer generation (and to a lesser extent Generation X) management is full of executives who are either dominant or "buddies" there is a third path that is gaining traction in today's competitive labor environment.
The third way is Authentically Curious Leadership. These leaders are clear about the desired outcomes and vision of the company and equally clear on the criteria used to judge the company's success. Yet they don't domineer nor do they need to be a buddy. They are authentically interested in other's ideas and provide an invitation to all team members to create solutions and solve issues on their own initiative.
Our experience at Profitable Engagements is that when leaders choose the Authentically Curious path, employees identify problems and new opportunities and address them without being told.
