AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP

There have been many studies and debates over what makes an individual a great leader. And "Authenticity" has been found to be the most essential trait expected of a leader.

Why is authenticity the need of the hour in leadership?

Authenticity is not a leadership accessory; it is a leadership imperative.

An authentic leader is one who delivers what he promises. Certain dimensions characterise authentic leaders. and there are 5 facets:

  1. understand leadership purpose - To understand purpose, we must be self aware, comprehend passions and have a strong desire to lead.
  2. Adhere to a value system - Integrity is one of the most crucial values in an authentic leader and the one that strengthens trust. A trusting relationship helps in more followership.
  3. Lead with compassion - The more open you are and true to yourself, the more you will build enduring relationships with your team.
  4. Build relationships - Relationship building skills provide long lasting , tangible and intangible rewards. long lasting relationships are established through working for a shared purpose and goal. , collaborative and
  5. exercise self discipline - A much needed characteristic. There is a need to be self driven and collaborative with a high level of self discipline.

Certain ways by which authenticity can be demonstrated.

* Expectations and communicating with clarity of the same.

* Being a great listener(lend thy ear) and valuing the ideas of the team members.

* Respect team members as individuals. Find time to speak with them. Respond to issues promptly.

According to Robert.K. Greenleaf, " The only test of leadership is that somebody follows."

Becoming an authentic leader involves work and, the wisdom that arises out of experiencing life in its entirety.
