"Australian Politics 101"
Dr Paul Szuster
MBA and management students benefit from my practical pedagogy and andragogy, drawing from my extensive business and management career, and underpinned by my relevant qualifications as a management educator.
I am currently facilitating an MBA course in HRM where one of the topics is industrial relations in Australia. The students in the?cohort come from India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Just before the three hour lecture I had a lightbulb moment. I realized that the prescribed materials made no mention of our government, and that it would be more effective if I gave the class an outline of the Australian political system.
Supported with three simply constructed slides, I covered Australia’s links to the Westminster system of democratic government, the structures within our parliament, the active political parties, and our electoral system. This generated useful discussion because of the historic links between the students’ home countries and the British Commonwealth.
Time well spent as the remainder of the lecture made more sense to the students.

1 年I feel fortunate to have been among the students who had the opportunity to participate in this class and benefit from Dr. Paul's wealth of knowledge and expertise. They provided us with a comprehensive understanding of the Australian government system, with a focus on fostering unbiased insights, devoid of any prejudices or unfavorable aspects. I extend my gratitude to Dr. Paul for imparting such crucial information.

1 年It’s always hard to provide a succinct summary of d Australian politics to people of different cultures and different political backgrounds. It would be fun to do a tile play of a democratic decision and see how the students make sense of it! Well done to bring it together!

1 年Hi Paul. An interesting and succinct article. I hope that you told the class that all of: 1. the Westminster system of (theoretically) democratic government; 2. the structures within our (corrupt and inept) parliament; 3. the active (though completely morally bankrupt) political parties; and 4. our (grossly inefficient) electoral system, are all broken ... and irretrievably so without a COMPLETE re-write of the system that has been steadily debased by successive governments since Whitlam came to power in 1972! I respectfully suggest that what the very astute and insightful Mr. Wadewitz was endeavouring to say is that "continuing to do the same thing ... but expecting different results" is the classic definition of insanity!
