Australian-made Plywood

These days, more and more people are on the lookout for Australian-made products—and as a result, we often get asked about Australian-made ply.

While the vast majority of plywood is sourced from plantations and forests overseas, there is a small range of plywood that is grown and manufactured right here in Australia.

So which species of timber are used for Australian-made plywood?

Hoop Pine

Hoop Pine (Araucaria Cunninghamii) is a popular timber choice for a large range of construction and design applications including joinery, shelving, furniture, cupboards and flooring. A species that is native to Queensland, Hoop Pine is a versatile softwood that is widely grown in plantations. The attractive finish combined with the ease of use and availability make it a great choice for pressing into ply.

Radiata Pine

Radiata Pine (Pinus radiata) is a softwood that is often used in construction. Native to the central coast of California, it has been extensively planted across Australia and is a common and familiar sight in many backyards and parklands. It is also one of the most widely planted plantation species here, both for the use of timber in construction, as well as for Christmas trees! The workability, ready supply and aesthetically pleasing finish make Radiata Pine the go-to timber for many purposes including structural timber, flooring, furniture, sleepers, poles, posts, paper and of course plywood panels.

Australian-grown veneers

There are also some lovely species of Australian grown trees that are thinly sliced and used for timber veneers. Our Maxi Veneer panels are manufactured on a state-of-the-art pressing line onto Birch or MDF, then pre-finished with our hard wax oil system. This creates the beautiful warm look and feel of natural wood that adds ambience to any space.

• Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis): A durable hardwood originating from the east coast, it features an even texture that suits a range of applications including joinery, flooring and furniture.
• Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon): A medium hardwood tree found in the eastern states, the rich colouring and attractive grain makes Blackwood highly valued for its appearance and finish.
