Australian Government Leverages Business Events to Attract Global Talent

The Australian Government has marked the business events industry as a key mechanism to attract global talent to Australia.

In late 2019, a new Global Talent Program was launched by the Morrison Government.

The ambitious goal under the new program is to identify and proactively recruit up to 5,000 highly skilled migrants in selected industries to Australia each year, who will receive a fast-tracked process to permanent residency.

The seven selected industry sectors include AgTech, FinTech, MedTech, Cyber Security, Energy and Mining Technology, Space and Advanced Manufacturing, and Quantum Information/Advanced Digital/Data Science and ICT.

Organisations like convention bureaux play an important role in attracting global experts through the international business events they secure for Australia.

One of the first business events that showcased the Global Talent Program was evokeAG – Asia Pacific’s largest agrifood tech event. Over 1,300 delegates from 22 countries gathered in Melbourne, presenting a unique opportunity for the Department of Home Affairs to meet with specialists from the agricultural industry.

Association of Australian Convention Bureaux (AACB) CEO, Andrew Hiebl said, “We commend the Government on this initiative and look forward to working with the Department of Home Affairs to identify international business events that align with the program’s priority sectors.”

Beyond the direct economic benefit of delegate spend, business events can be strategic tools for attracting trade, investment and global talent.”

Fantastic to see the Aus Gov supporting the case for business events. Convention centres are critical facilities to host business events and catalyse business to business links, promoting investment opprtunities in the host city, providing easy access for local businesses to tap into business and personal development opportunities and of course creating significant economic impact and job creation from every event held up to 365 days each year. Thank you to the AACB for continuing the strong advocacy for valuing and supporting the growth of business events in Aus.
