If you're an Indian graduate dreaming of studying in Australia, there’s some fantastic news for you. The National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) has made a significant update to its classification of Indian universities, making it easier for students to pursue higher education Down Under.
Decoding NOOSR’s University Classification
For those unfamiliar with NOOSR, it categorises Indian universities into three sections:
- Section 1: A student needs a minimum of 50% from a Section 1 university to qualify for a master’s programme in Australia. Panjab University is one of the prestigious institutions in this section.
- Section 2: A student must secure 55% or higher to study master’s degree in Australia.
- Section 3: Previously, students from these universities needed a first division to be eligible. However, NOOSR recently upgraded most Section 3 universities to Section 2 or even Section 1.
These classifications make it easier for students from these institutions to qualify for higher studies in Australia. Among those upgraded from Section 3 to Section 1 are Guru Kashi University, Lovely Professional University, and Punjab Agriculture University. Additionally, universities such as Rayat University Ropar, GNA University Jalandhar, and RIMT University Punjab have moved from Section 3 to Section 2. These upgrades significantly improve opportunities for students from these institutions to pursue their master’s degrees in Australia with fewer restrictions and increased eligibility for post-study work options.
Flying to the other side of the globe, the service of recognising international qualifications is provided by the National Information Centre for Qualifications Recognition working under the Australian Government Department of Education. These activities were formerly undertaken by NOOSR in Australia.
What Does This Mean for You?
This update is more than just a reshuffling of lists—it signals that Australia is actively welcoming more Indian students. If you’ve been contemplating studying in Australia, now is the time to take action!
Plan Smartly for Your Australian Dream
While this change creates new opportunities, a well-thought-out plan is crucial for success. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:
1. Choose the Right University & Course
Australia’s education system is highly structured, and choosing the right university and course is crucial for long-term success. Unlike some other countries, Australia emphasises academic degrees over vocational courses. You should:
- Opt for universities with strong global rankings and accreditation.
- Select a course that aligns with your career aspirations and future settlement plans.
- Research the employability rates and industry connections of your preferred course.

2. Focus on the CSOL List
The Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL) is a game-changer when it comes to securing post-study work visas and job opportunities. To maximise your chances:
- Pick courses that are in demand in Australia, such as IT, healthcare, engineering, and education.
- Ensure your chosen degree qualifies for a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485), which allows you to work in Australia after graduation.
- Keep an eye on updates to the CSOL list, as it changes based on Australia’s workforce needs.
3. Know the Post-Study Work Visa Rules
While Australia does offer a post-study work visa, there are specific criteria to keep in mind:
- Graduates under 35 years of age can apply for a post-study work visa, granting them valuable Australian work experience.
- Those who meet the skill requirements of Australia’s migration programmes may have the opportunity to apply for permanent residency.
- Understanding your visa options early will help you plan your career and settlement strategies more effectively.
4. Apply Only Through Authorised Representatives
The growing interest in Australian education has unfortunately led to an increase in fraudulent consultants and misleading agents. To ensure a smooth application process:
- Verify if your education consultant is an authorised representative registered with the Australian government.
- Avoid agencies that guarantee admissions or visas—genuine applications follow a strict verification process.
- Check reviews and feedback from previous students before committing to an agency.
Final Thoughts
Australia’s growing demand for Indian students is an exciting development. With NOOSR’s new classification, the pathway to an Australian education has become more accessible. However, planning remains key—choosing the right course, understanding visa policies, and applying through trusted channels can make all the difference.
If studying in Australia has been on your mind, this is the best time to take the leap. So, gear up, make informed decisions, and turn your study-abroad dreams into reality!
