Australia - Labour Market Update (July 2020)

LinkedIn's Economic Graph is a digital representation of the global economy, and insights from the graph provide real-time information on trends that are emerging in the labour market.

Last month, we published data showing early signs of recovery in Australia. In this update, we’re seeing the recovery sustain and continue through June, with the year-on-year hiring rate currently hovering just below -20% year-on-year.

(1) Hiring recovery continues in Australia

This analysis looks at the year-on-year changes in hiring rate, which is a measure of hires divided by LinkedIn membership. The analysis was conducted for the period of 11th Feb to 30th June 2020.

The data shows gradual recovery beginning at the end of May, coinciding with easing of lockdown measures. It has recovered from a low of below -40% y-o-y, to its current level of around -20% y-o-y. However, while businesses have been slowly re-opening, fears of a second wave of virus infections may put the country back into lockdown. We will continue to monitor the hiring trends as the situation evolves.

(2) Top trending jobs and skills

Our data for Australia shows that jobs with the most hires include Project Managers, Software Engineers and Business Development Managers, while the top trending skills include teaching, account management, curriculum development, business analysis, and JavaScript.

As we navigate the economic recovery of coronavirus, real-time insights into what’s changing are critical. LinkedIn’s Economic Graph is making datasets that will help us understand these dramatic shifts available at linkedin.com/workforce.
