Australia Gender Pay Gap results

Australia Gender Pay Gap results

Yesterday, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency published the gender pay gap (GPG) data for those Australian companies with more than 100 employees, that’s ca 5,000 organisations.

Data has been collated previously but shared on a sector-only basis.

Some key facts:

  • The average gender pay gap has reduced and is now 21.7%;
  • 62% of employers had a GPG in favour of men; 30% - neutral (±5%) and 8% - women;
  • The sectors with some of the highest GPG in favour of men tended to also be the highest paying industries - airlines; banking; construction.
  • Conversely, the smallest gaps were in some of the lowest paying sectors - hospitality, public administration, the arts.
  • Male dominated industries and larger employers were more likely to analyse their data and take action. Of the employers, 55% conducted a pay gap analysis and 60% of those acted on the results (ca 1,650 organisations).

There is some great analysis on the Guardian (no pay wall).

The data is consistent with most developed economies. What is really impressive is the collation and release of information in such a comprehensive and coordinated manner. The document Australia’s Gender Equality Scorecard is a great read with lots of actionable suggestions (although long – 84 pages).

Lots (!) of relevant links in the comments.

United Kingdom

The CIPD together with ADP have released their round-up of 2024 Pay, Performance and Transparency summary for the UK. Lots of great information and data which you might find useful.

The improvements made in GPG are just so slow and tiny. Very frustrating!

Thanks for sharing Rachel - I am curious to why only 60% of those who performed the analysis decided to take action.
