Australia has announced a significant extension of the Post-Study Work (PSW) visa program, allowing international students who complete eligible courses to stay in the country and work for up to five years. This move is part of the Australian government's efforts to attract and retain skilled talent to support the country's economy.
New measures for post-study work rights in Australia
The PSW program has been a significant factor in attracting international students to Australia, with the country's education system being ranked highly among global universities. This program allows international students to gain work experience in their field of study, increasing their chances of finding long-term employment in Australia.
Under the new scheme, Bachelor graduates will have their work rights extended from two to four years, Masters graduates from three to five years, and all Doctoral graduates will have their rights increased from four to six years. The list of eligible qualifications will be reviewed and monitored annually, and currently includes 226 courses in various fields such as medical and nursing, professional health, teaching, engineering, ICT, agriculture, and more.
However, not all courses will be eligible as they differ between education providers. The Department of Education will release a comprehensive list of eligible courses mapped to CRICOS course codes before the policy is implemented in July.
