Austin's Largest Project You Haven't Heard About
Colony Park, Austin's largest redevelopment project since Mueller continues to move forward. After signing an exclusive negotiating agreement in May with developer Catellus, the site is currently in its 24 month research and planning phase. While plans officially started in 2012, this project was decades in the making.
In 1972 the area was annexed by the city and was originally designed as veteran housing. When the community was first founded, houses were sold for $1 with promises of a thriving community to be built around them. Now, after almost 50 years and a $3 million grant from HUD, the development is finally ready to achieve its intended purpose.
Investment highlights are as follows:
Workforce housing for low income earners. A district park with a public swimming pool. Office space, retail and a transit center for commuters. Loyola innovation center.
The community is also partnering with Central Health to build the Northeast Health and Wellness Center to provide primary care as well as health and human services.
While construction isn't slated to begin until 2022, the community is optimistic that Austin will finally deliver on a promise a half century in the making. As the city continues to expand east, expect to see new developments in the area announced in the coming months.
