Austin Small Business Valuation Seminar

Mark Santarsiero, CPA, President and CEO of Marshall and Stevens, a nationally known business valuation firm, spoke to a select group of Austin small business owners on Friday, October 20th.

Mark began by covering the process of valuing the business, the drivers of value, and recent multiples for sales of businesses in various industries. Also discussed were specific cases where business owners made good and bad decisions with resultant outcomes. Mark included some education about the buyers in the market today- mostly sophisticated professionals intent on getting the best deal for their side, at the expense of the business owner. "Most business owners sell a business only once in their lifetime. Most buyers are sophisticated professionals intent on getting the best deal at the expense of the business owner." Lots of great proactive advice to help business owners begin to prepare for the most important event of their career- selling the business.

Also presenting were Mike Figer, CPA, with Figer & Company, and Matt MacWilliams, CFP?, with Weinheimer Wealth Management. Mike discussed the basics of business valuation and exit planning. He shared some great examples of business owners planning ahead with good outcomes, and some that reported the sale after the fact, learning to their dismay the mistakes made that couldn't be undone.

Matt MacWilliams, CFP? presented information about the importance of a current Buy-Sell agreement and the accompanying Business Valuation. He discussed the risks that business owners face and how to protect their business and personal assets.

Matt Weinheimer, CFP?, principal of Weinheimer Wealth Management, and Matt MacWilliams, CFP?, hosted the event at the Austin Board of Realtors Canyon View Boardroom. Mike Figer, CPA of Figer & Company, and Aaron Dominguez and Noah Marburger of First State Bank co-sponsored the event.
