At a recent meeting of the Urban Land Institute, Austin claimed the top spot for best overall real estate investment and development opportunities in the nation. The Emerging Trends in Real Estate report presented at that meeting stated:
“The capital of Texas has consistently ticked the majority of the top boxes related to recent real estate market attractiveness. The market has benefited from a diverse economy that was affected in a minimal way by the global financial crisis, a growing population base made up of an educated labor force, and the undeniable “hip” factor that makes Austin attractive to the millennial dominated workforce.”
Based on the rankings of 1,500 real estate professionals, Austin’s real estate acquisition and development secured top billing, but we lagged behind at #11 in opportunities for homebuilders, likely due to our rising cost for development, labor, and land. Our major transportation challenges and housing costs were also factors of concern. Overall, however, the attitude toward Austin is hopeful since our local leadership is attempting to address those challenges.
Dallas-Ft. Worth was the only other Texas city in the top 10, coming in at #2. San Antonio ranked #32, and Houston earned the #40 spot.
