Aussie Flowering Trees Take Over Japan
I snapped this shot of a beautiful red bottle brush this morning, when I was out for my daily exercise. This variety entered Japan during the Meiji period and many Japanese believe it is a Japanese variety. Not true!
Back in the early 1990s I was involved in promoting Australian cut flowers in the Japanese market, through a very successful campaign I created called "Flowerful Australia".
About 8 years ago I bought land and built our house here in Shiroganedai, which is the first true suburb you encounter in Minato-ku. I was amazed to see all of these local gardens with Aussie plants, especially the flowering variety.
We planted a wattle tree - Australia's national plant - on the third floor balcony and as you see in the photo, it was a big success.
These days the Aussie plants are being grown here in Japan but nevertheless, what an amazing take over of the gardening space.
Walking around the neighbourhood every morning is a delight to see little hints of Australia scattered around locally. As Japan gets hotter, I am sure the Aussie plants will thrive even more than they do now.
