Seasons may be changing, but your trusted monthly dispatch from the network is back in action – as September marks the arrival of the United Nations Summit of the Future! ?? This edition looks at the advocacy work we undertook in preparation for the milestone policy event, and the recent activities from around the network since August, including?global conferences and?team retreats.
Southern Voice Co-hosts the GLOBALGOALS2024 Conference
Southern Voice co-hosted the GLOBALGOALS2024 conference at Utrecht University, Netherlands, bringing together over 150 international experts to discuss the future of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Attendees explored innovative approaches to accelerate SDG implementation and proposed reforms to strengthen global sustainability efforts beyond 2030. Our Executive Director?Margarita Gómez delivered the?keynote speech "Evidence to Action: Innovative Methodologies and Insights from the Global South," emphasizing the need for a robust science-policy interface incorporating diverse knowledge systems.?
Key outputs from the conference include a joint statement ahead of?the Summit of the Future and a book chapter in "The Future of the Sustainable Development Goals" based on Margarita's keynote.
???????Secretariat Team Meeting: Planning for the Future
From August 13 to 19, the Southern Voice Secretariat gathered for a week of strategic planning and team-building in Lima, Peru. Our?team discussed plans for the rest of 2024 and a strategic vision for 2025-2026. The retreat included workshops on Southern Voice's values and culture, collaborative sessions to envision our 2030 impact, and team-building exercises to foster trust and effective communication.??
???SDPI's Executive Director Appointed to COP29 Committee
Our network member?Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI-Pakistan)?announced that their Executive Director, Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri, is now a member of the COP29 International Advisory Committee (IAC). As the sole representative from South Asia in this esteemed group, Dr. Suleri is expected to bring crucial regional perspectives to global climate discussions. ?? Advocating for Care in the Pact for the Future
In connection with our Basic Care Basket (BCB) project in partnership with CIPPEC (Argentina), we have been advocating for the inclusion of care in the Pact for the Future, a key output from the summit. This push recognizes the fundamental role of care work in sustainable development, and aims to ensure it receives due prominence in global policy frameworks. We are proud to announce the very first edition of our Global South Perspectives Project, inspired by the action-oriented chapters of the Pact for the Future. On October 3, Southern Voice will host the public webinar “Equity in Research Practices: a Southern-led Action Agenda” in partnership with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS). This session is part of our ongoing Equity in Research for Development project, and will focus on a synthesis paper exploring the complexities and challenges of promoting equity in research, bringing together perspectives from across the Global South and North.
