FEATURES

EXCLUSIVE FEATURE: How are airports revolutionizing the turnaround process with AI and computer vision? ?

“Until very recently, the turnaround has been a ‘black box,’” says Royal Schiphol Group’s Jeffrey Sch?fer , process owner of aircraft turnaround. “Most of the processes are not carried out by the airport; instead, they are conducted by the handling agent or the airline. As a result, we didn’t have any insight into what was happening.” Read this exclusive feature to find out exactly how AI and computer vision are transforming aircraft turnaround performance at airports all over the world.

EXCLUSIVE FEATURE: How does Changi Airport’s revamped T2 redefine the airport experience?

Since its three-tiered expansion, Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 2 has been nominated for numerous awards. Described by the airport as a place “where nature meets modernity", the terminal features a 14m-tall digital waterfall, an acrylic-edged platform that gives the impression of walking on water, and a ‘digital sky’ that changes its hues depending on the time of day and external weather conditions. Discover how BOIFFILS Architectures reinvented the usual aviation design language to create a luxurious, biophilic and mindful environment that "wows" passengers.

EXCLUSIVE FEATURE: How can airports unlock the potential of end-to-end automated baggage handling?

Increased baggage handling automation has the potential to cut an airport’s costs, improve operational performance, enhance baggage reliability, speed up processing times, tackle labor shortages and address concerns over luggage handlers’ health and safety.?Find out how the experts at Heathrow , Greater Orlando Aviation Authority: Orlando International (MCO) and Executive (ORL) Airports , SINGAPORE CHANGI AIRPORT ENTERPRISE PTE LTD and Royal Schiphol Group are seizing all of these benefits while keeping their complex baggage ecosystems running 24/7, 365 days a year.

EXCLUSIVE FEATURE: How are airports around the world innovating their self-service offerings?

Advanced self-service technology is emerging as a cornerstone of efficiency and passenger experience in the aviation industry’s rapidly evolving landscape. The technology’s advocates highlight the exciting applications possible in areas of passenger experience, baggage handling and generative AI, once the necessary customer acceptance hurdles are cleared. Click the above link to explore five of the most innovative self-service initiatives underway at airports globally.

EXECUTIVE COMMENT

OPINION: What are the key challenges and opportunities facing airport decision makers?

According to Airport Dimensions ’ annual passenger satisfaction research, the aviation industry has witnessed the first decline in passenger satisfaction since the report began in 2014 – eroding to just 70% – as passengers’ needs and desires shift dramatically. Uncover the cause and potential cures behind this scourge in an exclusive opinion piece from Chris Gwilliam , senior vice president of global business development at Airport Dimensions.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Mark Gruver, manager of United Airlines Station Operations Center

Mark Gruver , manager of the Station Operations Center at United Airlines , takes Passenger Terminal World?inside the airline’s use of AI and ML to optimize aircraft turnaround. Gain insights into the technologies that enabled the airline to reduce its average ground delay by two minutes and identify US$169m of savings potential across its network annually.

OPINION: Why airports shouldn’t overlook the role of food vendors in climate goals

Albert M. , director of growth and innovation at HowGood , explores how the deceptively impactful food and beverage (F&B) vendor emissions could be the deciding factor in airports reaching their net zero targets in time. In this detailed investigation, find out how terminal food purchases translate to airport footprints and how sustainability intelligence platforms could be the key ingredient to successful emissions disclosure reporting.

OPINION: Why neglecting employee needs can be a costly mistake

From digital transformation to architectural advances, investments in passenger experience are increasingly dominating the time and attention of airport executives. However, how effective can these investments be without the consideration of airport workers – the ones who are face-to-face with customers every day? Niklas Skovholt Mortensen , chief design officer at Designit Europe, reveals the hidden power of employee experience?(EX) and its ability to unleash untapped potential in every organization, boosting business success and reducing costs at the same time.

OPINION: What does the sustainable aviation fuel transition mean for airports?

Airports are facing unprecedented pressures to transition away from fossil fuels, particularly in the context of landing and take-off (LTO) cycles, which can account for up to 70% of an airport’s carbon emissions. Carl Dainter , global head of aviation at Mace , reviews the Keflavík Airport (KEF) future fuels readiness study and how airports around the world can follow suit to prepare for the increasing levels of fuel transition legislation.

DFW Airport begins US$9bn capital improvement plan

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has begun its US$9bn capital improvement plan, which will transform terminals, add new facilities and amenities, grow the number of gates, improve roadways and connectivity and enhance the airfield. The project, called ‘DFW Forward', will be the airport’s largest capital investment since opening in 1974.

Airports begin screening for Mpox as Africa declares public health emergency

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an alert for travelers departing to or arriving from countries with a known high prevalence of Mpox. CDC, along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security , is implementing Mpox screening at several major airports across the country, including New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport , Los Angeles International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport . Passengers arriving from regions where Mpox is known to be endemic or where recent Mpox outbreaks have occurred are subject to screening before they are allowed to enter the country.

Perth Airport to begin A$5bn construction works

Perth Airport in Australia is starting construction work on its A$5bn (US$3.4bn) capital investment program of infrastructure projects that are intended to provide the capacity for Western Australia’s growing aviation sector and passenger base. The project list includes two multi-story car parks, a new terminal, an expanded international terminal, the airport’s first-ever airport hotel and a new runway.

EC reinstates liquid rules for airports using C3 scanners

Technical issues identified by the European Commission (EC) will affect passengers traveling with liquids in the European Union as well as Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Norway from September 1, 2024. The EC has temporarily enforced restrictions on liquid screening at EU airports using Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB). These systems, also known as C3 scanners, are installed in several EU airports and were previously approved for use in the European Union. They currently allow passengers to carry liquid containers exceeding 100ml. However, effective from September 1, 2024, the maximum allowed size for individual liquid containers will revert to the standard 100ml for airports operating this type of equipment. It is not currently known how long the ruling will be in effect. Airports that already limit liquids to 100ml or that have not deployed the equipment will not be affected by this change.

Ethiopian Airlines and Dar Al-Handasah to develop a ‘mega airport city’

Ethiopian Airlines Groupe has signed a technical advisory and consultancy contract with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants India Private Limited (Shair and Partners), a partner with architects Zaha Hadid Architects , to embark on the design and supervision of a ‘mega airport city’ at Abusera in Bishoftu, Ethiopia. The mega airport city will feature a 1,100,000m2 terminal including passenger facilities, 126,190m2 of airline support facilities and over 100,000m2 of cargo and airport support facilities. It will also include an associated airfield and other essential airport infrastructure.
