In Caldwell, Jr. v. Jaurigue, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court found that a non-parent who lacks legal custody of a child does not have an obligation to pay child support. The back-to-school season is upon us, and it is a given that every parent wants their child to go to the best school available. We're proud to recognize and celebrate the August work anniversaries of several of our Hangley Aronchick team members. Thank you for your years of hard work and dedication to the firm!
Shareholder Adena Herskovitz celebrates 19 years at HASPS this month. A graduate of Yale Law School , Adena handles commercial real estate deals for local and national businesses, nonprofits, entrepreneurs, developers, owners and tenants. Her experience also includes work in the Corporate and Transactions practice.
We also celebrate the HASPSiversaries of associates Chelsea Nichols (5th year) and Mathew Gomez (2nd year).
Chelsea Nichols is a member of the Antitrust group with extensive litigation experience in a range of matters, including antitrust and competition, products liability and mass torts. In addition to her legal work, she is an active member within the firm and in the community, having previously served in programs with the Philadelphia Bar Foundation and Philadelphia VIP .
Mathew Gomez is part of the Family Law practice, where he handles all aspects of family law, including custody, support and divorce matters. Mathew regularly speaks for legal organizations, including the Pennsylvania Bar Association , MONTGOMERY BAR ASSOCIATION , and Pennsylvania Bar Institute . He also serves as a Philadelphia Bar Association board observer for CORA Services and has been admitted to the leadership development program with the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Family Law Section.
We also proudly commemorate the work of chairman Ronald Schiller and shareholders Michael Carlson and Daniel J. Layden , each of whom celebrates 15 years at HASPS this month.
Ron Schiller's broadly diversified trial, appellate, and arbitration practice has been an incredible asset to the firm, particularly in high-stakes litigation matters. Ron serves as national counsel for several clients on insurance coverage issues and routinely tries the most difficult coverage matters on current issues in the field. Ron is consistently ranked highly by his peers in publications like Chambers USA and Best Lawyers and has contributed significant time to the advancement of the practice of insurance law. We are thankful for his award-winning counsel and dedication to Hangley Aronchick's Insurance practice.
Shareholder Michael Carlson resolves sophisticated insurance and reinsurance disputes involving healthcare liability, professional liability, toxic tort, and product liability issues. In his time at HASPS, he has also handled appeals on important insurance coverage issues before state and federal courts and contributed his time to pro bono efforts.
Shareholder Daniel Layden joined HASPS with Ron Schiller and, with Ron, helps tackle the industry’s most sophisticated and challenging cases, providing coverage advice to insurers as well as litigating coverage disputes on their behalf. He consistently secures successful results through dispositive motions, bench and jury trials, and on appeal.
Hangley Aronchick's Insurance practice was honored as a Band 2 Insurance Practice in Chambers USA's 2024 list of the best legal teams in Pennsylvania. Clients noted, "The firm has excellent lawyers. They are very smart and see the big picture." Ronald Schiller and Daniel Layden were both recognized as notable practitioners.
In celebration of Hangley Aronchick's 30th anniversary, we are reflecting on meaningful cases for our firm and the greater community. This month, we recall Karl Stephenson Chambers' rescue from death row.
The firm began representing Chambers in 2003, when his capital case was remanded to the Court of Common Pleas for York County for resentencing after Chambers’ death penalty sentence was reversed on a Post Conviction Relief Act petition. Shareholders William Hangley and Matthew Hamermesh sought to have Chambers sentenced to life in prison on the grounds that he is intellectually challenged and therefore, under the U.S. Supreme Court standard established in Atkins v. Virginia, a very recent decision at the time, ineligible to receive the death penalty. At the June 2005 Atkins hearing, the judge ruled the Hangley Aronchick team had successfully impeached and discredited the Commonwealth’s witnesses and that pursuant to Atkins, Chambers could not be put to death.
