August …New School Year ... New Job?

As summer activities turn to back-to-school shopping, our natural inclination is to start thinking about the “year” ahead. New Years Day may be the start of the calendar year, but Labor Day is the start of the academic year. Starting around age 5 we quickly learn the drill for August/September. The hottest summer months see the first day of school and all the excitement of new teachers, new classes and maybe new friends. Starting something new can often be hard or a little scary. But unless standing still is an option, it’s necessary.

The same goes for new jobs and the job searching cycle. As recruiters, we try hard to avoid assuming when the job market will be “hot” and when we will be busy. Even though we are at the whim of the employers and the job seekers, we see a definite pattern. Throughout May and June there is a lot of rushing to complete a search. Candidates want to get hired or situated before “summer” starts in earnest. July is the universal vacation month. We hear more “yes, we are still in search of a <fill in the blank> but with summer hours and vacations, it’s hard to schedule interviews.” Many job seekers are ok to take time with their families and not rush their search. However, when late August rolls around the urge for a routine and typical hours feels like the norm. Time to get back to WORK! This is the time of year when hiring needs that had been put on hold are suddenly much more urgent, and candidates start to feel the pinch. Kids are going back to school, so I guess “I better get back to my search”. The fall calendar still guiding our inner voices. Labor Day is just around the corner... So…it’s time to start reigniting your search if you are a candidate. Make sure you are in contact with your coworkers, past coworkers and most importantly, recruiters. Make sure you are following up on all your LinkedIn leads. Finally make sure you have reached out to any potential employers and let them know you are available and ready to work! As an employer, have you made sure your hiring managers are ready to HIRE? Have you followed up with your network of recruiters? Have you made sure your postings are up to date and any non-active postings are taken down and new ones are fresh and appealing and attracting the right candidates?

Its late August, vacation time has passed, and beach towels are washed and put away. The phones start to ring, and emails are returned in a timely manner. Sit down at your freshly straightened desk with your newly sharpened pencils. Unpack your supplies and let’s all get ready. It’s a new year. Are you ready for a fresh start?
