August Monthly Reflections
Engaging and sharing is at the heart of the Safety Directorate in IOGP .? I believe they are one of our biggest opportunities and biggest challenges.? On 7th August 1974 the E&P Forum, now known as the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers, was established with improving safety standards central to the mission.? For the next 50 years the Member companies have shared data and developed recommended practices that are freely available to the whole industry.? We now have practices that are widely recognised and implemented and our opportunity is to keep them up to date and further promote their adoption.? Life Saving Rules is the best known and most adopted.
Even though we have seen incredible improvement in performance in the 50 years of IOGP (for example, a 90% reduction in the Fatal Accident Rate for IOGP Member data), in safety our work is never done and we must continually challenge ourselves to do more, and I often get reminders.? This week I saw Step Change in Safety published the results of their very insightful Process Safety Workforce Survey Report.? The report is full of excellent feedback and one of the improvement items that stood out for me is sharing of Process Safety information was the lowest scoring question in the survey.? In July, IOGP published the 2023 Process Safety Event Data.? Collecting and publishing the data is important but the survey feedback shows we need to do more to make the workforce aware the data and insights are freely available.
September is a busy month for engagements and an excellent opportunity to share and promote IOGP publications and work to close this awareness gap.? In a couple of weeks, we have the SPE HSES Conference in Abu Dhabi hosted by ADNOC.? At the Conference Dave Fargie will present a paper on insights from the IOGP Process Safety Event Data.? An opportunity to share learnings from the data and how the insights are being used to drive actions and the further promotion of key products like the IOGP Process Safety Fundamentals. ?I will be joining a panel at the Conference to discuss Human Performance Principles.?

Our partners at International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) have their HSE and Sustainability Europe Conference in September and my colleague Marinara R. will be joining a panel on attracting talent to our industry and Silke Kirchner, a member of the IOGP Wells Competency and Training Subcommittee, will be joining a session on Barriers.? I wish them and IADC a successful event and thank them for their efforts to engage and share their experience and learnings.
As IOGP embarks on the next 50 years, Safety and our ambition to prevent fatalities remains a foundation of the Association.? Success relies on working together, engaging and sharing and promoting the adoption of recommended practices.
