SOC Convos: Microsoft Sway abused in massive QR code phishing campaign?

A massive phishing campaign has been exploiting Microsoft Sway, a web-based tool, to distribute malicious QR codes in a sophisticated attack. The campaign sends emails that appear to be from trusted sources, directing recipients to Microsoft Sway pages containing QR codes. When scanned, these QR codes redirect users to phishing websites designed to harvest sensitive information such as login credentials. This method is particularly dangerous as it can bypass traditional email security filters, making it harder to detect. The attackers leverage the credibility of Microsoft’s platform, making the phishing attempts more convincing. Security researchers have reported that this campaign is ongoing and widespread, affecting a large number of users. Microsoft has been alerted to the situation and is working on countermeasures to mitigate the abuse of its platform.?

Our recommendation: Train your teams to be cautious with QR codes, even when they appear to be from trusted sources and implement multi-factor authentication to protect critical systems.?
