August Celebrators bring light to a Sakada Community for Project Kaarawan

Living the mission to keep the lights on, SLTEC August Birthday Celebrators chose to celebrate their Project Kaarawan activity together with the six (6) families of a Sakada Community who don’t have electricity in their houses, located at Brgy. Putol, Balayan, Batangas, August 24.

Similar to last year’s celebration with another group of sakadas, the celebrators donated six solar lights to the beneficiaries, one for each family, to help alleviate their situation of having no electricity supply due to financial struggles.

Since this month is still in the off-season of sugarcane harvesting and milling, the sakadas, who largely depend on the sugarcane industry, do not have a stable source of income, and paying their electricity bill is not yet their priority. That is why, when given one renewable light set-up per home, the beneficiaries expressed their gratitude as these will help them do more things in their household even at night.

The volunteers then extended their effort in demonstrating how to install, use, and maintain their donated solar lights, as one of the beneficiaries tried to operate the item. Team August also provided one first aid kit per family, since they are more prone to the impacts of natural disasters given that their houses are only made up of improvised materials.

Moreover, the celebrators didn’t forget to make their visit more fun for the kids as they conducted a Bring Me game that brought them excitement, especially with packs of chocolates given as their winning prizes.

To cap off the activity, Tatay Efren, the landowner of the sakadas’ settlement, sent his heartfelt message to the celebrators who definitely “lightened” the situation of the community. The sakadas also took time to thank the celebrators for having them chosen as their beneficiaries.

#ProjectKaarawan is an employee-led volunteer initiative where birthday celebrators from SLTEC choose a community or cause to celebrate their birth month with. Since its inception, Project Kaarawan has strived to be an avenue for collective action for its volunteers and a channel of hope for its beneficiaries.
