Opportunities to Give Time, Talent, & Treasure
?? This Sunday, help Prince William Conservation Alliance protect the ecosystem at Veteran's Park! They are hosting multiple work sessions between 11:30am-2:30pm in partnership with Green Steeze. Learn about eco-friendly gardening tips, tree care, wetlands, invasive weeds, and local animals, plus meet your neighbors, do some weeding, and enjoy snacks. RSVP here.
??? Volunteer as an instructor for Negotiation Works! This nonprofit uses innovative negotiation and self-advocacy training to empower people emerging from difficult (and often traumatic) situations so they can better navigate their everyday challenges and live the next chapters of their lives confidently. They are accepting applications for volunteer instructors to teach multi-week negotiation courses in 2025, their signature program tailored for historically marginalized individuals. All volunteers undergo a comprehensive training program with in-person training sessions and ongoing mentorship. Learn more and complete their application by August 30!
?? Help Main Street Child Development Center secure needed backpacks and supplies for 50 elementary school children from families with low incomes! With the next school year starting soon, they are looking for people to purchase backpacks and essential supplies ASAP. Donate $75 online or purchase items from their Amazon wish list (that have been specifically selected for the upcoming year).
??? Join Computer CORE as a board member. This nonprofits transforms lives through digital literacy education, propelling adult students onto a successful learning and career pathway. They are looking for board candidates motivated by a passion for education, access, and opportunity. Learn more and contact their Governance Chair, Marianne Alicona, at [email protected] for more information and the application packet.

News & Happenings
?? Mother's Outreach Network has partnered with the Social Justice School to give 15 families $2,400 during the next school year! This new guaranteed income pilot will be the first one offered by a DC school, allowing kids to get their own payments. The 15 families selected are at risk of a referral to the Child and Family Services Agency, which investigates cases of child neglect. More than 8,000 local students were referred to this agency during the 2022-23 school year for accumulating 10 unexcused absences at school, but there are many barriers that can make consistent attendance challenging. As Executive Director Melody Webb told the Washington Post, "We think that the issues are rooted in poverty. The system currently blames parents who are already struggling to meet the basic economic needs of their family." Read more here.
?? Washington City Paper's Best of DC 2024 picks are here! Congratulations to the winners, runner-ups, and finalists, including many of our nonprofit partners such as Dance Place, CityDance, FRESHFARM, Washington Improv Theater, Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Thomas Circle Singers, City Dogs, Calvary Women's Services, DC Environmental Film Festival, Gay Men's Chorus, and President Lincoln's Cottage.
