Getting Started in Telecom Recruiting - by Ian Raddant , President of TekCom Resources

Ian is sharing how he got started in telecom recruiting and what he learned as a telecom recruiter, highlighting how he's grown from both successes and setbacks!

How I got started in Telecom Recruiting

I graduated from college in 1989 with a degree in marketing and a passion for communication. I was fascinated by the emerging technologies that were transforming the way people interacted and exchanged information. I wanted to be part of that revolution, but I wasn't sure how to get there.

I started out in the telecom industry working for MCI selling long-distance service and dedicated access. Remember those days??I was happy doing this until the opportunity arose to move to Dallas and open an office for a telecom recruiting agency. They were looking to add someone that they trusted, had some telecom knowledge, a strong work ethic and willingness to learn. That sounded like me, so I interviewed and was told my "They mentioned that my "enthusiasm made up for my lack of experience" - a fair assessment!

The interview went well, and I was offered the job! I was excited and nervous because I knew that I had a lot to learn. I had no idea what a Telecom Recruiter did nor how to find and attract qualified candidates for the telecom industry. I had to start from scratch, but I was eager to take on the challenge!

What I learned as a Telecom Recruiter

I'll be honest, the first few years as a Telecom Recruiter were tough. I had to learn the basics of the telecom industry, the terminology, the skills, the trends and the industry players. I had to learn how to source candidates, how to screen resumes, how to conduct interviews, how to negotiate offers and how to close deals. Then on top of that, I had to learn how to deal with rejection, competition and ever-changing market conditions. Along the way, I learned how to build relationships, trust and credibility with both clients and candidates all while moving and adjusting to a new city (Dallas, TX).

But I also gained invaluable lessons that have shaped both my career and my life. I learned the importance of:

  • Passion - I realized that I loved what I was doing because I was helping people find their dream jobs and helping companies find their ideal talent. I was connecting with people, solving problems and making a difference in the telecom industry. I've always felt passion for what I do, and that has fueled my motivation, creativity and performance.
  • Curiosity - I quickly learned that the telecom industry is constantly evolving and that I had to keep up with the latest developments and innovations. I learned to ask questions, research and remain open to learning new things every day. By becoming curious about the needs, goals and aspirations of my clients and candidates, I discovered how I could assist them in achieving their objectives.
  • Persistence - I discovered that recruiting is a challenging field that demands hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I had to overcome obstacles, tackle challenges, and deal with disappointments. I learned the importance of following up, following through, and trusting my instincts. Persistence became key to achieving my goals.
  • Communication - I learned that communication is essential for successful recruiting. It became clear that I needed to interact clearly, effectively and professionally with all stakeholders. Active listening, sincere empathy and prompt responses were crucial. I had to convey my value proposition, set expectations, and provide feedback with honesty, integrity, and respect. Back then, my primary tool for communication was a trusty fax machine.
