Mind & Matters: August snapshot

Over July we saw a flattening of emotions. Negative emotions decreased—most notably frustration, which saw a 7% decline—however, our positive emotions also dropped, with hope seeing the biggest decline at 4% from last month. In this issue we also explore how the top three emotions vary for New Zealanders of different ages, genders and life stages, with significant differences noted between men and women, younger and older Kiwis, and households with children versus no children.

We also took a closer look at what New Zealanders have been doing to improve their physical and emotional wellbeing over the last 12 months. As it turns out, over a third (34%) of us reported that we've been doing more activities to improve our wellbeing in the last year.

To wrap up this release, we delved into New Zealanders' financial situation and cost of living impacts. More New Zealanders are quite/very concerned about being able to meet their financial needs five years from now (39% up 6% from April), while we're seeing more cost-saving habits and decision-making coming into play. We'll be exploring these behaviours in greater detail in our upcoming quarterly Talking Points report on what measures New Zealanders are taking to improve their financial situation, so subscribe to Mind & Matters to get the report delivered straight to your inbox.

In this issue:

  • How we're feeling
  • 12-month outlook
  • New Zealand's direction
  • Wellbeing
  • Financial situation
  • Cost of living and inflation impacts.
