Would you believe that there is a single threat to women’s health so common that it can lead to depression, heart attacks, and even premature death? It’s called self-silencing, and it is likely the reason that women comprise 80% of autoimmune disease cases. Women are taught from an early age to stifle their feelings and put themselves second to others. However, this can have deadly consequences. Studies show that women who didn’t discuss their feelings during fights with their spouses were four times more likely to die than those who did, even when accounting for other risk factors.
As we take this month to look at Women in the Workplace, we want to acknowledge how silence can sometimes be more harmful than any action. Whether we are looking at menopause, performance bias, microaggressions, Paid Family Leave, or Imposter Syndrome, there is power in knowing that these are common experiences. Discussing them can be healing, both by knowing you’re not alone as well as by sharing tips and resources to help each other. Read on for some of ours.
Closing the Gap: An Imperative for Paid Family Leave
The United States is the only high-income country in the world that?does not have paid parental leave. Paid family leave (PFL) in the United States is a crucial workplace benefit that allows employees to take time off work with pay to care for family members or personal health conditions. Despite its importance, the U.S. lacks a comprehensive federal PFL policy, resulting in a patchwork of state-driven initiatives and private sector efforts.
