CPL Carstell O. Stewart
On 8 February 1944, sixteen African American Soldiers made history by graduating from the Parachute School and being the first African Americans awarded their silver parachute wings. However one Soldier Carstell O. Steward missed the final week of training because he was on emergency leave.Upon his return to Fort Benning, Ga Stewart continued his training as "the lone Black jumper". He had no help and went through his required jumps alone. CPL Stewart went to graduate and rejoin the other All Black Test Platoon members and formed the 555th Parachute Infantry Company. Stewart also journeyed to Oregon with other Triple Nickle members to perform Smokejumping duties in 1945.
After leaving the Army in 1946, Stewart returned to Morgan State College. After graduating from Morgan State College, Stewart attended and graduated from Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio, graduating in 1951, as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine.
