August 07. A Date To Remember For Me
There are some dates which get etched in your memory for a lifetime. These are achieving personal goals which makes all your loved ones feel good about you. Yes. Today is such a milestone date for me. For 3 years back inn 2019, three important things happened that I am happy to remember.
First, the house transfer to our name, something that has been pending for nearly 25 years, got done. With a little help from a friendly neighbor, and a little nudge from wife, and nearly 35 visits to the District Collector’s office, we got this monkey off our backs. Yes, it is a Collector’s land that our building stands and we would need the NOC from his office to complete the transfer!
Second, I quit smoking. One of the promises done to myself has been met. More than the physical benefits (and there are many that I know), it is the emotional benefit of keeping the promise that satisfies me more. Quitting to smoke has been a milestone that was linked by me to transfer of apartment. How important was that is clear form the fact that I had linked it to several things in the past but cheated myself in the past
The Third was that I had started walking a minimum 10000 steps each day. Don’t know what inspired me, but I have continued the practice to this day. It has kept me healthy, fight off Covid and generally gives me cheer and a sense of achievement each day! Must express here my gratitude to wife and daughter for bearing with me for this. Often, it has encroached upon my time with them.?
These three achievements and the fact that I have started writing blogs around that time have helped me retain my sanity during the tougher times of the past three years. These times have also taught me many things: How one does behave in bad times reflects how one would in good times, that you need a Guru to steer you in good as well as bad times, that the ability to trust in others is the greatest ability, you are a speck in the universe and are not important, God is the only thing that is important, etc. It is not that these things were not told to me before.
It is reflection time and rededicate oneself. That I shall not smoke, that I shall lead a healthy and happy life. That I shall try my best to live to my commitments to myself, my family, my colleagues, my clients, my friends, my vendors, my society, my nation, etc.

2 年Very Inspiring post. Very few people can stick to such commitments to oneself like walking 10000 steps a day and quit smoking for good. Keep up not only these commitments but several other that you make without revealing them as these are commitments to yourself. Men like you are men of steel. Best wishes. DHS

2 年I can relate to what you incredibly achieved. Specially the second one. I was never a smoker. I might have taken at the most 6-7 cigarettes in my lifetime, yet, I have taken the last puff in 2000. 22 years and counting, I know it won't be worth breaking the 22 year streak for anything. I wish you get lot more monkeys off your back.
