Audiobooks - A Love Letter

799 Books. I recently noticed at the top of my audible account how many titles I have owned and listened to.

I love audio books. I love all types of audio books. Some are pure entertainment, others thought provoking, some reinforce things I believe in, others are to understand (and maybe change my mind) about things I disagree with.

I am not faithful to audiobooks. I have a dozen or so podcasts I listen to - but there is something about a book - where an author takes great care to craft a message, sometimes based on years or a lifetime of gathering expertise - that makes me think that my investment of a few hours is totally worth it.

I found my days (and I anticipate your days) are filled with unproductive moments. Going to the store, at the gym or on my bike, sitting in the auditorium suffering through a school event for my children (JUST KIDDING, don't do this!) that can be turned into highly valuable and productive time - by just listening to a book.

Audiobooks let you learn seemingly passively - without having to block off time to do so. Its like a IV drip to your brain.

If you, like me, decide to start to use all this downtime (hours per day if you actually think about it) to do passive learning, and you have kids, there is one problem you will run into. I am just warning you so that you can be prepared. The kids are always stealing your ear buds. They are critically important to always have on you... and you go to find them and they are gone. Family meetings, accusations, punishing... none of it seems to matter. Solution: buy them in bulk and pull out a new pair when the dirty little thieves strike again.

Dude! 799 - I thought I was the man when I broke 400! I gave myself permission to buy unlimited audiobooks about 5 years ago - and it's been a a spice to all the regulars things I have to do. I'm always game to do the dishes - as long as I can listen while doing them! Recently I've joined the ranks of full time glasses wearers - which while a drag has given my the opportunity to get frames with Bluetooth built in - and free my ears up to hear a bit more of the world around me - while still listening. Might want to check them out - one less thing to keep in your pockets!
