Dream BIG


In leadership, just like in life, the real game-changers are those who look beyond 'possible'. It's about the courage to chase after those visions that nobody else can see.


Big ideas—the ones that seem a bit out there—often need a mix of daydreaming and risk-taking. Studies have shown that pushing the boundaries of conventional thinking is when we really start to tap into our imagination and begin innovating.


The Science of Imagination:

Dreaming big isn't just our minds drifting off; it's our brains gearing up for action. Neuroscience has revealed that when we visualize our dreams and 'what ifs,' we activate the same brain regions as planning and taking action. It's a mental rehearsal for real live scenarios. Dreams are a window into our brain, filled with sensory experiences like colors, sounds, and emotions—feels just like being awake. Dreams feel real. (PsyPost)


In addition, Harvard researchers have discovered daydreaming might play a role in the brain's ability to change and adapt—its plasticity. Their studies show that the patterns of neurons during daydreams can predict how the brain will respond to what's coming next, meaning these moments of reflection are key for learning and memory. This is what inspired me to write about imagination. As grown-ups, we sometimes forget to take a moment to just daydream and think about the 'what ifs'. That's what childhood was all about. Using our imagination, a gift that sets us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom, and sadly, it's something many of us don't fully embrace or maybe afraid to act on.


Maya, who's almost 3 now, is filled with curiosity and imagination, teaching me a thing or two along the way. On my own path of self-development, making time each morning for self-reflection and imagining 'what ifs' has been incredibly impactful. It's a game-changer, I highly recommend it.


And in case you were wondering, no monsters were found. We have thoroughly checked our 2 bedroom condo in the West Loop several times in the past couple of weeks - no monsters.

Books are a key part of my continuous self improvement. Here are a few that prove the power of our imagination.


"The Magic of Thinking Big" by David Schwartz: Emphasizes the power of setting high goals and thinking BIG. It discusses how our imagination can transcend conventional limits and achieve the extraordinary.


"The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream" by Paulo Coelho: Classic about the importance of following one's dreams and listening to one's heart. Great story that talks about destiny, dreams, and the role of imagination in pursuing one's true path.


"Mindset: The New Psychology of Success" by Carol Dweck, PhD: Not about imagination directly, this book discusses the 'growth mindset', which is crucial for tapping into our creativity and innovation. Imagination helps us to envision and realize potential.



In leadership and life, we have to dream up what hasn't been dreamed. That's the heart of leadership and life that transforms - chasing after the 'impossible' and making it real.
