Auctions, acquisitions and brand cameos: Newsmakers this week

The week belonged to public broadcaster?Prasar Bharati who pocketed a cool Rs 1069.60 crore from the e-auction of 65 MPEG-2 slots on DD Free Dish. With this, the broadcaster's total revenue saw a 66% jump this year from Rs 120 crore last year. The auction kickstarted last week and continued into this week,?becoming the longest-ever auction in Free Dish history.

In other news,?Amazon has been putting finishing touches to its acquisition deal with Times Internet for the latter's OTT platform MX Player. From what we know, the US-based giant has roped in a leading consulting firm for due diligence. The deal could add 78 million of MX Player's users to Amazon Prime Video's 28 million.

As talks of the acquisition gained steam, speculations of?Nikhil Gandhi's departure from MX Player as its COO?were also put to rest by the company. The company announced that Gandhi has put in his papers to pursue other interests after two years at MX Player. We'll be watching closely to see who takes over the mantle from Gandhi after his eventful tenure with the company.

In OTT news, ever since Disney+ Hotstar decided against renewing its licencing agreement with Warner Bros Discovery,?the latter has been looking for a home for HBO content. Industry sources say that it has been in talks with several OTT platforms in India. However, Jio Cinema and Amazon Prime Video could be ahead in the race to bag HBO content.
