Attrition rate is killing me, HR do your thing!!
Not sure how many of you follow or have read Harry Potter but I am an ardent follower of the series (strictly books, don’t think the movies did justice) . Thinking why the hell am I asking this?! Well, to draw a very easy inference. Harry Potter has helped me become a better person!
(Yes you read that right.)
If you haven’t read, nothing I have written here will make sense. If you have, well I am going to be discussing something that everyone would have noticed.
Professor Dumbledore was the greatest wizard known! He was the epitome of goodness (not entirely in my opinion) and was still very approachable to all the kids. He always ensured he lets everyone thinks they are being heard and still ended up getting exactly what he wanted. (Its a rare quality to have these days!) Professor Snape, on the other hand, was also very knowledgeable & powerful. But because of his demeanour & behaviour, he was never approachable by his students! You would often find him scolding students or punishing them if things don’t go his way! And we all know who was loved more between the two even though both made sacrifices that were if not same but big :)
So, are you a leader who uplifts employees by supporting them with the correct means/ideas, to together achieve an unachievable task or you’re the dreadful Snape who just wants to push his students down and make them feel stupid all the time :)
Did that strike a chord?
I feel, all successful (not just because they are profitable!) startups/MNCs are successful because of how they groom their employees to be leaders. They don’t run after their employees to achieve targets instead help everyone to understand how they will contribute in their small little way in the success of the organisation and in turn give birth to a highly motivated leader! And the kind of ownership that this invokes in someone is all that’s required for any company to have a happy & highly efficient employee!
There’s nothing more exhilarating than knowing how even a single person not achieving a 5000 INR revenue can impact the legacy your organisation is building. Every ambitious person is trying to make his/her mark. And the way a lot of smart organisations are marrying the two are the ones who are successfully running their business and not fretting about attrition rate or man hours spent in classroom training to upgrade the skills (don’t get me wrong, they are important, but only when there’s a genuine need & not because HR has to show how many man-hours were delivered in 365 days! I mean I get shocked to see that organisations are still in the stone age of counting man-hours!!!!!)
So be more like Dumbledore because if you’re still a Snape after reading this, you would end up being the most hated hero when you can easily get things done with a little bit of love and appreciation :)

5 年Great analogy Divya. Well, it is primarily about making people feel heard and valued. Always reaching a resolution may not be possible, but the very idea of listening to our people at the right time can delight them; Empathy. End of the day we are all human.

5 年Well written, Divya. Suggest solutions to the following, if you have the time: 1. How to deal with employees who develop attitude issues when work pressure breaks on them? Attitude issues pertaining to not accepting mistakes, being defensive, being critical of suggestions etc. 2. How can a leader become a better task manager when work is piling up and some of her/his employees could be the same as above - attitude under pressure? Thanks!
