Students are increasingly finding, the opportunities to do the below are reducing.
?
??Informal work experience
??Internships
??Placement years
??Micro-placements
??Part-time work (including jobs on campus)
??Volunteering
?
Reasons for less of these traditional opportunities can be due to:
?
??Reduced opportunities from employers (running a placement is harder in hybrid working)
??Cost of living
??Cost of university
??Balancing study and down-time (for the full university experience and wellbeing)
?
However, there are other ways students can develop skills, explore different sectors and better understand where they may want to focus their attention when it comes to which roles and programmes to apply to.
?
These include...
?
Short-live projects
Working with careers teams and faculties/schools in universities, colleges and schools to provide short ‘real’ projects.
These can be optional or assessed as part of the curriculum.
University of South Wales provide a series of virtual work experience programmes with SMEs via targetconnect Pathways technology provision.
Another example I have first hand experienced, is 凯捷咨询 's Community Challenge in seasoned partnership with 英国伯明翰大学 . We benefitted not only from engaging with brilliant undergraduate talent, but they became superb, organic on-campus brand advocates. No surprise that this led to many hires annually, with strong retention levels in the subsequent years.

Competitions
Employers can define the assessment criteria and find the very highest-tier talent for their organisation. Be it technical skills or showcasing knowledge and passion for a subject area.
Sponsoring these national competitions are great for brand awareness especially in an increasingly competitive and non-synonymous hiring landscape.
A great example of this is our Undergraduate of The Year Award. Where 100+ student finalists are shortlisted across 10+ categories after a series of assessments.
Events & Challenges
Skills and insight events can be a really good way to engage with talent in person or virtually. Assessing the ability of pre-screened talent in short interactive ways, can see great ROI on time and money.
Challenges are particularly useful for employers hiring for identifiable skills and in the tech space and hackathons are generally well attended and engaging.
targetjobs UK run so many of these throughout the year to bring pre-vetted students to the leading employers in the UK. These include:
Each of the above if well top and tailed with marketing, data and communication plans, can provide employers not only with a warm and relevant talent pool pre-live but also create an army of ambassadors who talk about their experience.
