Attracting and Retaining Top Talent- How Your Company Culture Can Be Your Game Changer!

Not long ago, a top expertise in Credit Management and a great friend of mine was on high spirits and celebration on hitting a dream role in one of the Top Tire Banks here in Kenya. Chatting with him today spoke of a disappointed person planning his exit- just 3 months in. His top reason for exit being unbearable rigidity and toxic work dynamics. Yes- this is what culture can do.

In today's competitive job market, attracting and retaining top talent has become more challenging than ever for Organizations and businesses alike. As a Consultant and Proponent of High Performance Culture, I am affirmative that, one key factor that plays a significant role in this process is the corporate culture of those organizations. Company Culture is a reflection of it’s shared values, beliefs, and practices that shape the behavior and mindset of employees within a company along with Leadership and company structure/policies for reinforcing and sanctioning behaviors.

A great corporate culture can be a powerful tool in attracting and retaining talent, and here's why:

1.???Culture as a Magnet: A strong corporate culture acts as a magnet, drawing in potential candidates who align with the company's values and vision. In a world where employees seek meaningful work and a sense of purpose, a positive corporate culture can create a compelling proposition for top talent. When companies have a clear mission, a supportive environment- a culture that promotes inclusivity, diversity, and employee well-being, it becomes an attractive proposition for candidates who want to work for an organization that aligns with their values.

2.???Culture as a Retention Tool: Corporate culture is not just about attracting talent; it is also about retaining it. Employees who feel connected to the company's culture are more likely to stay with the organization for the long term. A positive culture that fosters employee engagement, encourages collaboration, and recognizes and rewards achievements creates a sense of belonging and loyalty among employees. When employees feel valued, supported, and included, they are more likely to be motivated, productive, and committed to the success of the company, leading to higher retention rates.

3. Culture as a Differentiator: In a competitive job market, a strong corporate culture can set an organization apart from its competitors. A unique and positive culture can serve as a differentiator for potential candidates who are evaluating multiple job offers. Companies that prioritize their culture and invest in creating a positive work environment are often seen as progressive and forward-thinking, and this can attract top talent seeking a company with a strong cultural identity.

4. Culture as a Driver of Performance: Corporate culture can significantly impact employee performance. When employees feel connected to the company's culture and values, they are more likely to be engaged, innovative, and committed to their work. A positive culture that promotes a growth mindset, encourages continuous learning, and provides opportunities for career development can motivate employees to perform at their best. When employees are empowered and motivated, they are more likely to contribute to the company's success, leading to better business results.

5. Culture as a Tool for Diversity and Inclusion: In today's diverse workforce, creating an inclusive culture is crucial for attracting and retaining talent. A culture that embraces diversity and inclusivity creates an environment where employees feel valued, respected, and included, regardless of their race, gender, tribes or other differences. When employees feel included and respected, they are more likely to be engaged and committed to the company's success. An inclusive culture also helps attract a diverse talent pool, as candidates are more likely to join an organization that values diversity and inclusion.

In my view, a great company culture is a powerful tool in attracting and retaining top talent. It creates a positive work environment that aligns with the values and expectations of potential candidates, fosters employee engagement and loyalty, differentiates the organization from competitors, drives performance, and promotes diversity and inclusion. Organizations that prioritize their culture as part of their talent management strategy are more likely to succeed in attracting and retaining the best talent in today's competitive job market.

Well said, Damaris . The challenge with culture is often what sounds great on paper doesn't translate into day-to-day operations. And what many organisations fail to realise or are unwilling to commit to is the journey to creating a great culture. It doesn't happen overnight, it must be intentional and driven from the highest levels of the organisation with reinforcement at every level. Barring that, it falls flat on its face and we end up with scenarios like your friend is experiencing that are all too common.

Being a great place to work is the difference between being a good company and a great company.
