Attracting the Next Generation of Leaders

Attracting the Next Generation of Leaders

This past week I attended a conference in California for the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. I was not only attending to learn, but also teaching. I had the great opportunity to present on how to attract the next generation of leaders. I was pleased to see a room full of millennial's and pleased that I had an opportunity to learn some new things too!

What I learned is that millennial's are tired of being called millennial's just as I would tire of always being referred to as a “boomer”. They want to be professionals, period. They also don’t like being pigeonholed as selfish, all about me, spoiled and/or unmotivated. To be honest, the millennial's that I know impress me constantly. As in any generation, you have those that rise and t hose that don’t, just the law of averages.

I was pleased that my presentation received several head nods from the younger attendees. Here are the things we discussed and how organizations can bring in the next generation of leaders!

  •  Give them a voice- Listen and learn.
  •  Make them feel valued- Their opinions DO matter.
  •  They love giving back, find a way to give them the power to make a difference.
  •  Is your company or organization active on social media? That’s how many millennials communicate.
  •  Give them positions of leadership and let them LEAD!

By 2025, 75% of the workforce will be millennial's and Gen Z. Are you doing all you need to do to bring them in AND let them lead?

 Make it a great day!
