Attracting healthtech companies to Medicon Valley

Medicon Valley is the leading life science cluster of Northern Europe, and per capita is among the most dense life science ecosystems in the world. Within a one-hour drive from Copenhagen Airport you find a vibrant life science ecosystem of 1,500 companies of which approximately 250* are healthtech companies. These companies have chosen Medicon Valley for good reason – curious to learn more? Read on.

Heathtech is growing fast in different #lifescience hotspots around the world and MediconValley in Greater Copenhagen is no exception. The #Covid19 pandemic has put the spotlight on healthtech showing the world what new solutions and technologies can bring to the table – for patients, health & care professionals and payers alike. For some specific areas of healthtech such as telemedicine and remote monitoring & management Covid19 has fast tracked technology adoption and achieved in weeks what in all likelihood would have taken years under normal circumstances. And, recently (15 June 2020) the first digital (software based) therapeutic for ADHD treatment in children (EndeavorRx) was approved by the US FDA. Beyond-the-pill treatment options have a bright future.

Medicon Valley has all the ingredients healthtech companies need to succeed

Medicon Valley is the leading life science cluster of Northern Europe. The cluster is located in Greater Copenhagen, which is a region of political and economic collaboration spanning Denmark (Region Zealand and The Capital Region) and Sweden (Sk?ne, Halland and Blekinge). Medicon Valley is home to more than 1,500 life science companies of which more than 250 are in healthtech. The ecosystem is fully integrated with companies ranging in size from one-person university spinouts, through mid and large size pharma, biotech, medtech and of course also heathtech companies - with Novo Nordisk being the largest life science company in the region. To service these companies is a large number of support companies e.g. various types of contract service companies including design, development, testing, production, regulatory aspects, manufacturing, production (all types), clinical trials, engineering, to law firms specialized in life science IP issues. All of this is located within a one-hour drive from Copenhagen Airport. What’s not to like.

Relocating your company is a big thing

The decision to relocate a company, start-up or established, is both complex, time consuming and potentially risky. Not only are you leaving behind a location which you in all likelihood have called home or at least a base for some time, maybe you whole life. There can also be co-founders and partners who are involved in the decision. If there are employees these will also be affected by a decision to relocate, and let’s no forget investors who can be both small and large. So what and how exactly do I assist in this process?

Deep industry & sector insight

I have worked in life science and healthcare for many years and I understand how the industry and the systems work. Ten years in biomedical research has given me a solid understanding of R&D in pharma, biotech and medtech as well as all kind of CxOs, and about five years in clinical sales and marketing has given me hands-on experience in how to sell to hospitals and clinics, and just as important how to engage finance departments of big hospitals, health insurance providers and other payers.

What do I do?

So exactly what is it I can do for you and how is it done? It is really not that complicated. “Getting to know you and the company: understand the journey you have embarked on and where you want to go. If Medicon Valley can help make this journey successful we should talk.“

"If Medicon Valley can help your company succeed with its mission, we should talk.“

Understanding you is the first step in the process of finding out if Medicon Valley is the right match for you. Initial steps are done via telephone and video meetings. If your company has a clinical aspect I look for potential clinical and academic collaborators which you can partner up with as part of your relocation. I also make a short-list of relevant office and co-working locations and present to you. At this stage a first-call with potential collaborators can also be envisioned – testing the waters. If these initial explorations give positive indications of interest the next step is a physical fact-finding missions which include tours of select co-work spaces on the region. Meeting relevant stakeholders and collaborators face to face. A visit can may include meetings with lawyers talking about company structure, setting up a company and how it is done. Copenhagen Capacity's talent department is also a relevant organisation to talk to, but we can also refer you to specialised head-hunters who can assist you.

The best about it is: our services are free of charge and fully confidential.

Good article. Please mind that most of #healthtech solutions including #digitaltherapeutics are actually regulated products being either #medicaldevices or #combinationproducts. The regulatory environment is an minefield and access to expert knowledge on this is critical for market access.

Good job Niels. In Copenhagen Science City we work hard to make sure, that the companies you attract get the best possible opportunities to co-create and test their health- and care innovations with scientists, healthcare sector personell and over 20,000 students in health and STEM related study programmes.
