Owning a Home More Affordable Than Renting Across U.S. but Both Still Pose Significant Burdens
The 2025 Rental Affordability Report shows that owning a home in the United States is more affordable than renting a three-bedroom property in more than half of county-level markets around the nation.

Monthly U.S. Foreclosure Activity Increases in January 2025
The January 2025 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report shows there were a total of 30,816 U.S. properties with foreclosure filings — default notices, scheduled auctions or bank repossessions – up 8 percent from the prior month but down 7 percent from a year ago.

Home Values in Opportunity Zones Continue to Ride Coattails of National Gains During Fourth Quarter
The fourth-quarter 2024 report analyzing qualified low-income Opportunity Zones targeted by Congress for economic redevelopment in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 found that median single-family home and condo prices increased from the third quarter of 2024 to the fourth quarter of 2024 in 49 percent of Opportunity Zones around the country with enough data to measure. They were up annually in 61 percent of those zones.

Zombie Foreclosures Remain a Small Fraction of U.S. Housing Inventory in First Quarter of 2025
The first-quarter 2025 Vacant Property and Zombie Foreclosure Report shows that 1.4 million (1,372,396) residential properties in the United States are vacant. That figure represents 1.3 percent, or one in 76 homes, across the nation – the same as in the fourth quarter of last year and up slightly from a year ago.

Refinance Activity Up Again During Fourth Quarter Despite Broader U.S. Downturn in Home Mortgages
The fourth-quarter 2024 U.S. Residential Property Mortgage Origination Report shows that 1.64 million mortgages secured by residential property (1 to 4 units) were issued in the United States during the fourth quarter. That was down 3 percent quarterly but up 14 percent from a year earlier.
