Attitude is the key

Attitude is the key

Our young people live with the feeling of always being on the edge of the abyss with enormous and unpredictable effects on their (our) personal or work relationships. That anxious and overwhelming feeling that something bad is going to happen at any moment. Does this situation condition their lives, their way of looking at the world, their identity? The scenario is not easy: climate crisis, globalization, digital revolution, economic crisis, wars, uncontrolled migration movements. The problem is that this situation immobilizes them, makes them fall into a state of helplessness and catastrophism and prevents them (and prevents us) from imagining alternative scenarios.

The context is complicated, no doubt about it. The solution is difficult to trace, even to imagine. Benedetti has a phrase that is now very relevant: "When we thought we had all the answers, suddenly, all the questions changed". In other words, our supposed stability has become unstable and relative.

It is logical to get discouraged. But I also believe that when we assume that discouragement is normal and no longer surprises us, then we do nothing to change it, we resign ourselves, we conform. And when someone takes this path, they are two steps away from having only three words left: bitterness, sadness, bad mood, and living like this is really ungrateful, isn't it? When the black cloud arrives to our lives we lose our attitude, our illusion and many times our desire.

We are living in a change of era, not an era of change, and change hurts. If they are real, they hurt. A very complex social turning point, very competitive and individualistic.

Our youth, to some extent, have the feeling that one cannot influence their environment. That no matter what they do, things will not end well. And it is true that all this generates uncertainty and anxiety, but it is equally true that it is a somewhat comfortable attitude. And this point is key, the attitude. The attitude to face these complicated circumstances, to demonstrate the greatness that all these kids have inside. To change everything that is in their hands to change. Problems cannot become entrenched or paralyzing. Quite the contrary, even if they seem to be unmanageable undertakings. No to conformism! You cannot make a pact with conformism. You cannot make a pact with comfort. You cannot make a pact with tiredness. You cannot make a pact with the comfort zone.

The world of work is not spared from this ever-changing situation, and is a source of various concerns. Fear of not finding a job, of being laid off, of not being able to reinvent oneself, of contracts, of temporariness, of not advancing professionally and becoming stagnant, of not being able to move the helm of change or even not knowing how to evolve. In other words, a constant, invisible, silent, indeterminate fear. And of course, living with the sword of Damocles around your neck is a heroic, epic act.

Restlessness leads to discouragement, discouragement to worry, worry to fear, fear to panic, panic to hysteria, hysteria to despair. And in that we cannot give in. We cannot afford to lose hope, least of all the young professionals who are fighting their first battles. No to every man for himself! Fear feeds individualism, selfishness, and I am convinced that it makes us worse people. Beware of this generation of young professionals becoming the generation that has ended up taking refuge in its own complacency and victimhood. It cannot be tolerated. We cannot accept it.

Many young people are overwhelmed by the exceptional situation we are living in. Tired of not finding a job, fearful of losing it or disenchanted with the one they have. Many of us have felt at some point the need for change in our lives, but we rarely believe that we can do it, and we just wait. But no, we are responsible for our own lives! I am convinced that our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions.

Changing our lives means being able to "look inward" and review all those aspects that do not work and that generate dissatisfaction. Being able to rearrange all the pieces to build a new script for which we feel responsible and with which we want to commit ourselves.

I would invite them to identify their dreams. Not to invent them, but to detect them in order to discover your mission in life. The truth is that what matters most is buried under layers of pressing problems and immediate concerns. Because many times we look for happiness in the wrong places.

My experience tells me that when you conquer your fears, you conquer your life. No to living in a state of pause or airplane mode! Take your life by the horns and do with it what you want to do, not what you can do in a residual way. The key is in the attitude.
