An Attitude of Gratitude

One of the best inspirational stories to come out of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was that of gold medallist winner Hansle Parchment from Jamaica who won the men's 110m hurdle race with a season best timing of 13.04 seconds on August 5.
All this would have come to nought if it had not been for a volunteer who came to his aid. The Jamaican athlete described how he nearly missed the event after boarding the wrong bus and ended up at one of the aquatics stadiums. However, Lady Luck had something else planned for Parchment as a Tokyo Games volunteer gave him money for a taxi and pointed him in the right direction. The Jamaican sprinter managed to reach on time, compete and win the gold medal.
The story could have ended here, but Hansle was made of better mettle. He went back to meet the volunteer who had helped him win and personally thank her. Sadly, in all that euphoria, most of us would forget that little act of kindness. Not Hansle.
To me, Hansle deserves another gold for his attitude of gratitude.

And so it is in our lives. How often have we stopped to think and reflect about all those individuals who have helped us get to where we are. For me, me the two most powerful words are THANK YOU. They become even more powerful when it is people like Hansle who remind us and teach us how important it is. Also, the impact it has when it makes the recipient feel important and special.
Taking up on his example, the Jamaican government has extended a special invitation to the volunteer to visit Jamaica.
All because of the power of one random act of kindness. Followed by a THANK YOU. And a video that has gone viral.

3 年It's indeed a great act of kindness and an act of gratitude. One helped the athlete and the athlete made history. This is another example of humanity. We still have good persons in this world. But we can count how many real good persons we meet everyday. This act of kindness from the volunteer and the act of gratitude by the athlete might contribute to change the mind set of people. Hats off to both of them.
