Attitude is everything.

Attitude is everything.

Last week, I reached out to a candidate who had submitted their application for a position I had advertised. They were a graduate student with no experience, but I wanted to assess what they might be seeking in case a more suitable opportunity arose, given their impressive CV and strong qualifications.

They chose to answer the phone with a common South African slang word for hello, which was acceptable. I then asked if I was speaking to (insert name here), triggering another slang response, and they were quite dismissive. Initially, I thought perhaps they couldn't hear me, so I confirmed if they could, only to receive another rude, dismissive slang response. However, once I mentioned I was calling from a recruitment agency, their tone changed drastically. Suddenly, they presented themselves as professionals capable of articulating in full sentences and communicating in a respectful manner. Despite continuing with the screening call and discussing their experience and expectations, I won't be recommending them to my client this time simply due to their attitude, as I know my client won't resonate well with this demeanor.

Reflecting on this encounter, I realize that perhaps I am being overly critical. However, let me emphasize who would not have entertained the conversation further: a hiring manager or anyone from an internal talent team. As a recruiter, I can offer advice and guidance to my candidates. I did counsel this candidate that it would be advisable to answer the phone in a more professional manner in the future and not dismiss callers outright, considering they actively apply for positions and will likely receive calls from prospective employers.

First impressions are crucial, whether it's through your CV, your social media presence (let's be honest, it's 2024, we don't pretend we aren't stalking your socials), your telephone etiquette, or the moment you meet someone for the first time. Wherever you are and whatever you do, ensure that you project a positive, professional attitude where it may count the most.
