Is your team working for you? Are you facing frequent team attrition? Do you find them productive enough? Is your customer or project sponsor happy with your team?

As a project manager, you need to remember always that you are as strong or weak as your team. Managing team can give your lot of challenges and as well as opportunities. If you are well aware of your responsibilities with regard to team, their needs and aspirations, you will sail well and would be able to use them as an opportunity for advancement for yourself and for them. Let us understand what are their expectations?

Direction to their career – team members always want to grow and they expect that you should be able to provide help and direction to their career by giving them trainings and opportunities to work experience. This has to be seen practically as PM has to operate within the project environment. However if you keep an eye on this aspect, and make it a project objective to help them grow in the direction that they want, by arranging in-house and outside training sessions. Also, it will create an environment, where senior team leaders can encourage others as well.

Integrity as a PM – The need for integrity runs very deep in human behaviour. If your team finds that you are hypocritical or favor certain members in distributing rewards or benefits, they will not respect you and not be loyal to you. As a PM, you need to take extra care and ensure that your decision making is transparent and inclusive so that they feel a part of the process.

Domain competence – most team members expect their project managers to be able to lead them in the respective domain or industry, although this may not be necessary. Many times, project manager is competent in a niche subdomain, in the same domain and may not be competent to guide all team members. Also, at times, project management is just a managerial position, and manager is from an unrelated domain. In all such situations, it team expectation has to be clear and senior management should support you.

Handle conflicts – as we know conflict management is another major aspects of your responsibility as a PM. What helps majorly here is your ability to connect to people around you and emotional maturity.

All the above expectations would require strong leadership skills in the project manager. As we said earlier, project management could be a great opportunity to lift your career, provided you are well competent and ready to do that.
