Attention: Project Managers – Is your TEAM TAKING RESPONSIBILITY?
Is your team helping you meet the project deadlines? Are you being challenged to ask them repeatedly to complete the work in time? Do you realize that you are up for a bigger problem?
This situation may be not there most of the time, but whenever it surfaces it takes all your attention. But, let us think why this issue happens at the first place?
At times, you will find that your project is in mess. You are being stretched by the customer, your manager and may be by your vendors also for either the interim deadlines or some other requirement. When your team members find that you are not able to give a direction to a project as a project manager for one or other reasons, and when you are frequently failing on your commitments and losing your grip on the project, they will feel very jittery and nervous.
The project you are handling might face such challenges from either customer side (say, if the scope is going through frequent changes or the important stakeholders are asking for different scope changes) or sometimes even from your own organization when say right skilled team members are not available internally in the organization or even in the market, or in some cases as I handled the funds available for the project are unrealistically short and it is next to impossible to complete the project in that budget. In those situations you will find it difficult to drive the project and keep the team motivated.
You, as a project manager, have to be very prompt in such situation regarding nailing down the problem to an individual stakeholder who may be a customer team member or within your own organization, in which case the role of your manager becomes super important. And if your manager is not supporting you, then your job becomes even more difficult.
Project manager has to ensure that all documentation is available from various stakeholders for any such situations, without any hesitation or delay, without bothering whether the person is an important customer or even your manager or senior manager; else you are up for a bigger trap. In difficult situation no one will save you except your valid documentation and systematic communication with the strong leadership and awareness.
Issues crop up when you presume things and expect your manager to help you implicitly or even customer to expect to act in your favor. Remember that in a corporate environment, everyone works for himself or herself, you have to learn to keep your role well defined and safe from various situations which may not go in your favor.
