Attention: Project Managers – Are your project deadlines realistic?

Is this not a common thing to accept unrealistic deadlines by a Project Manager? Why does it happen? What goes behind the scenes? I know many Project Managers just keep accepting such things unwillingly.

Projects are begged by delivery organisations under huge cost and time pressures from clients. The cost pressure is obvious because client wants to get the maximum out of their investment, and also we should know that project investments are quite significant amounts. For large projects it could be hundreds of millions of dollars or even more, so every penny is under scrutiny. So, project manager has to explain any expense in the project, may be for better skilled people or for any material.

Also, I have noticed time pressure is quite common for many reasons. Clients would award the project to a performing organisation only when it is absolute necessity and urgent. They would select the delivery organisation which is ready to accept within time and cost, and out of competition the project would be signed and ultimately land with the Project Manager.

Now, is it possible to avoid the time and cost pressure by the Project Manager? No, absolutely not. That is the part of the business. Project management is a function which inherently means balancing the competing demands of the stakeholders.

If the project manager is not strong enough, he or she would be stretched from multiple sides by stakeholders because of competing demands. So what to do? Project Manager has to be a strong leader which very effective communication skills. Project management is a perfect place to learn various aspects of corporate functioning and move up the corporate ladder quickly. It helps you understand the pressures each department goes through to make money for the organisation and finally how to handle the show in your favour.
