Attention: Project Managers: Are YOU FIT for the PM Role?
Are you facing consistent issues in your role as PM? Are you tired of team issues? What about every bickering customer issues? Do you want to find out whether the role of the Project Manager is suitable for you?
Friends, it is high time you should know that the role of PM does not suit everyone? It poses consistent challenges of all possible kinds. The challenges could be endless, which could be related to:
- The project itself – it could project scope clarity, performance or timelines and so on. Most projects face problems of schedule, budget, scope, skills availability or personality issues of the stakeholders involved. It
- Customer or sponsor – funds may not be available readily or flow of funds depends on proceeds from other sale or events. This could be big risk for the project timelines unless project stakeholders are aligned to this
- Stakeholder’s support – it is not rare to find the lack of alignment on major project issues or deliverable among stakeholders, and it is vital for the role of the project manager. There is no science in handling stakeholders support, it is a balancing art for their competing needs which you will learning for the entire career duration.
- Team management – As a manager, you are as strong or weak as your team. I am sure we all understand this well, however team issues are not easy to handle practically and can make or break your project success and also your own success as a project manager. It is surely a skill to handle teams successfully, so that team is capable, committed and loyal
The challenges are many more, however, in the midst of all these challenges, there are huge opportunities for you to grow endlessly as a leader in the corporate. But are you really prepared for handling the challenges? Are you ready to become a leader of people committed to the project? Can you handle people across multiple levels in the vertical hierarchy?
Each one of us has individual interests and strengths, and everyone does not have to go for the role of PM. In my experience, I have met many project managers who are technical geniuses but fail miserably in the PM role, primarily because they lack people skills.
Again, not everyone has to have people skills, you can choose many technically or domain focused roles, like architect or consultant. There are many other roles which are individual contributor kind of and make more sense for you. It is not possible for you to succeed in the role and enjoy the career journey unless you enjoy handling these challenges? You would do much better in the other roles suitable for you and paying comparable compensation.
PM roles are for those who are strong people leadership focussed; enjoy challenges posed by people interactions and gradually looking to become senior program delivery leaders in corporates.

4 年I feel, one should have the passion to resolve issues, risks & problems on daily basis, to become PM. It is certainly not a bed of roses, especially if you to handle large & mega projects.... but it is a huge tunnel of opportunities, learning & developments!

4 年I'm really fit for PM roles. The reason behind is the ability to manage people with their expectations at the end of the project. If you really don't fit with stakeholders Management, you will actually do nothing. Therefore, PM role is 90% psychology.
