Engineers & Project Managers – Do You Need MBA?

We know that all engineers and project managers need to learn Leadership Skills, but do you need an MBA degree? How about the cost of acquiring an MBA from a reputed business school? And the opportunity cost of the lost compensation? Combined both, on an average, it is above 200k USD. Is not it a huge investment? And what is the guarantee of the returns?

An MBA degree teaches you how to be a good Manager, not a good leader. Are not both very different? Manager is the one who manages the resources like material, money and people. A Leader is the one who inspires and motivates people to follow them.

Recently came across a great book by Camilla Graynelson, that talks about the subject on learning leadership skills. In fact, most people join MBA programs to have a great career, many of them do as well..but largely it is joined by students looking for some boost or a degree wanted in the market.

Probably not aware of that learning the leadership skills effectively can help their career boost much faster and higher, and MBA is not the place to learn leadership skills, although they do learn a part of it, MBA curriculum is primarily teaching management skills, which is managing resources?

Someone can ask then, what are leadership skills. In my view, being a leader requires you to have the following:

1. Certain level of self-awareness knowing our likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses and consistently working on them for being better. Learning this generally needs help of a coach or an accountability partner.

2. Have a clear vision of what you want to achieve in your career or life, and creating annual, monthly and weekly goals flowing from that vision

3. Knowing our interests and strengths, and aligning the same with your vision and goals

4. A strong sense of taking complete accountability for the results, in spite of any circumstances. This is very profound and having a deeper understanding and internalisation is the key to leadership.

5. Ability to handle our emotions, including setbacks and failures. This can take ages to learn unless you put real efforts; it is simple to learn but needs real guidance of an able coach.

Let me know your observations? Try apply this to any of your current issues / concerns that you are facing in your work, and let me know if you have any queries?
