Attention CEOs and CIOs – SAP/Microsoft/Oracle/Infor ERP OR homegrown / Inhouse Developed ERP Software?
The purpose of this article is to help you decode the advice of Vendor Suggestion made for Selecting ERP. Firstly, it is not just the CIO’s responsibility to choose the ERP but it is also the responsibility of the CEO to ask the right questions so that right choice will emerge at the end of the exploration process.
Firstly, you need to know this, there is no ERP software which will be an exact fit for your business. Yes, the Vendor’s will claim a list of you competitors who are using their brand; however, they are not going to reveal the challenges each of their customers are facing when it come to implementations and rate of failures and Success factors. I am not here to explain that in this article however you can go through my webpage to understand why most ERP projects fail www(dot)thedigitaltransformationexpert(dot)com
All the brands such as Microsoft, SAP, Oracle, Infor etc., propose the standard off-the-shelf systems that have modules in them such as Finance, HR, Sales, PP, Inventory, Supply chain and so on. However, you need to understand that these are just skeletons of each of the process modules. A process has arms such as suppliers (internal &external), inputs, output and customers (internal and external) To accommodate the entirety, you need to consider the workflows that combine together to feed the process and it is here where you are different from your competitors because your workflows and tasks are unique to your business and this is not present in any of the off the shelf-ERPs.?Hence These ERPs ?have to be customized.
Customization means ripping off the original coding to build customers features that accommodate your business specific workflows and tasks that needs to be articulated in the form of new features your ERP software. Now you need to note, that the base ERP is configured however customization is done after and above it. So, when the ERP vendor announces a new updated for your ERP, it becomes a big challenge because the Update is for the base product, and does not include the unique customizations you have done. Usually, the Vendor forces the ERP customers to upgrade or else they will not support the old version of the software. However, upgrading also means you have to do the customizations all over again when you upgrade the based software.
The Solution:
There could be few solutions to this :

1.??????There are Third party, no code process automation software’s that can be integrated with the ERP software when the basic skeleton ERP product is configured, and all the customization and automation can be diverted to this no-code (no programing) third party software that will automate the workflows and process without disturbing your ERP solutions and hence no need for ERP customizations hence you will be save from majority of the expense. NO System Integrator Vendor will advise this to you, Because their billing from you will reduce extensively and they will loose revenue.
2.??????The Solution also includes the capability to leverage ML/AI to be able to read any kind of document data and process as per pre-defined business logic/rules and perform almost any action that is needed post validations and checks all done in?the?background.
3.??????You may use that industry popular ERP as reference and build you own customized ERP solutions where you have better control on the resources, timelines, budget and you will not have to face the pressures of upgradation processes as described above.
